Violet's parents

Parents unheard from in years

Violet’s parents are the people she is least willing to speak of, and the people she can least let go. She has not said a word to them in years; the break is so complete that even others can see it. By her own count, it has been three years.

“It's been 3 years. They haven't checked to see if I'm alive, let alone happy. So I'm not particularly interested in being the bigger person.”

“已经三年了。他们连我是死是活都没问过,更别说过得开不开心。所以我可没兴趣当那个大度的人。”TL

— Violet, to Bebop

In Violet’s telling, she is the one who was left out in the cold; yet that has not truly settled things between them. When she talks about her parents there is still a sulk in it, and a certain care as well:

“No… I haven't talked to them in years. But even if I was I wouldn't want to scare them.”

“不知道……我好几年没跟他们说过话了。就算说了,我也不想吓着他们。”TL

— Violet, to Baba

So much of what she does is aimed at those unseen eyes. The greater her feats, the more she wants to see her parents try to “forget she exists”; and whatever she means to buy, she first weighs with one thought: they would never approve.

“Let's see my parents forget I exist now…”

“等着看吧,我爸妈现在该假装不认识我了……”TL

— Violet
“Time to buy something my parents wouldn't approve of”

“该去买点我爸妈绝对不会同意的东西了。”TL

— Violet

She also dreads the thought of them reading about any of it.

“Hope my parents don't read about that.”

“希望我爸妈别看到这个。”TL

— Violet

Others read the relationship in different ways. Victor says he doesn’t get her, because she doesn’t talk to her parents; she shoots back that he doesn’t talk to his either, and he answers that at least he doesn’t know who his are — and she does. Seven assumes she is doing all this because her parents are disappointed in her; when she asks whether he really thinks she is that clichéd, his answer is short: “Yes.”
