The Shooting
What Pocket received on his eighteenth birthday was a bullet to the chest. He speaks of it without a trace of warmth, and says the “gift” came from his father’s own hand.
“My father's gift for my 18th birthday was a bullet to the chest. Today's my chance to say "thank you."”
TL
The one who fired was Calico. She admits she pulled the trigger, but insists she never tried to kill him; Pocket, for his part, remembers that a quarter inch to the right and that bullet would have been square in his heart.
“I shot you, I didn't try to kill you.”
TL
“The hell you didn't. A quarter inch to the right and that bullet would've been square in my heart.”
TL
Pocket survived. When others bring the matter up, all they tend to offer is a jeer.
“"Daddy tried to kill me," poor baby.”
Solomon, for his part, told him that he was lost, and that death and rebirth go hand in hand.
“You're lost, Pocket. Find your way back.”
TL
