The LichGraves's mentor

She is a female lich who dwells in a severed hand sealed in a lead-lined box. For years she had been looking for a student she could pass her knowledge to, and at last, by guidance of some kind, she had Darcy dig her out of the earth by hand. Since then the hand has been the thing Graves treasures most, and the one in the box is both her mentor and her closest friend.

Graves is especially attentive to her mentor. Whenever things go her way, she says this should make her mentor happy; and when the mentor wants something, she says her mentor has needs, and must be appeased.

“My mentor has needs.”

“我的导师有需求”

— Graves

As Graves sees it, there is no point in having a lich for a best friend if she can’t tap into her power.

“What's the point of having a lich for a best friend if I can't tap into her power?”

“如果我无法利用英灵的力量,那拥有一个英灵好友又有什么意义呢?”

— Graves

Not everyone sees it that way. Seven told Graves outright not to trust her mentor. Graves assumed he was wary of liches as such, but the trouble, he said, lay not in what she was but in being a mentor at all.

“Don't trust your mentor.”

“不要相信你的导师”

— Seven, to Graves
“No, because mentors only teach what they want you to learn. They are craven and use the young to live glories they could not achieve on their own.”

“不,因为导师只会教他们想让你学的东西。他们卑鄙无耻,利用年轻人来成就他们自己无法企及的辉煌”

— Seven, to Graves

The Venators take a harsher view. Venator is convinced the lich is using a young, living girl, and has demanded that Graves hand over the hand; Graves answered that he doesn’t even know her mentor.

“The lich is using you.”

“英灵在利用你”

— Venator, to Graves

In the venator’s words, Graves is nothing but the lich’s pawn.

The lich’s influence reaches into other matters, too. By Graves’s account, her mentor needs that Tome; and Abrams has said he can’t let her get the Tome.

“My mentor says she needs that tome.”

“我的导师说她需要那本书”

— Graves, to Abrams

For the history of the hand itself, see the Lich Hand.

Kelvin is wary of the mentor as well. He has urged Graves to find another teacher, warning that the lich will only lead her to ruin.

“The lich will only lead you to ruin, Graves.”

“格瑞墓,英灵只会把你引向毁灭。”TL

— Kelvin, to Graves

Graves pays him no mind; she bets, instead, that her mentor would love to get her hands on the stone Kelvin carries.

“I bet my mentor would love to get her hands on that stone.”

“我敢肯定,我的导师一定很想得到那块石头”

— Graves, to Kelvin
