Baba's Bench
A headstrong park bench
Baba’s Bench is a bench animated by magic, and it has become her handiest tool. The moment she calls it to life, the bench charges ahead on her behalf, while she herself rides along, sitting steady on top.
“Let me animate this bench, I'll be right there”
“让我把这张长椅唤醒,我马上就到。”TL
As far as Baba is concerned, the bench can very nearly do the work for her. She talks about it half in pride and half in puzzlement; all she knows is that it works.
“I'll let the bench do the work for me”
“我让长椅替我干活。”TL
The bench does not always do as it is told. It has a mind of its own, and now and then Baba has to speak up to soothe it and tell it to slow down.
“This bench's got a mind of it's own!”
“这长椅有自己的想法!”TL
That temper brings its own trouble: the New York subway won’t let it on board, which Baba resents no end.
“Can you believe they won't let me bring this on the subway?”
“你敢信吗?地铁居然不让我带这张长椅上车。”TL
Who sits on the bench is no small matter, either. When someone angled for a seat, she refused flatly: it seats two, herself and the pigeon.
“This bench seats two, me and the pigeon.”
“这长椅就坐两个,我和鸽子。”TL
A treasure like this naturally draws covetous eyes. Paradox once announced that she was not leaving without that bench.
Nurse Harrow once told Solomon that he hides his true nature, like “the crone on the park bench.”
“You obfuscate your nature like the crone on the park bench.”
“你把真面目藏起来,就像公园长椅上那个老太婆。”TL
