Iron-Fisted Matron of the Possession Ward
“I am stern, severe even, but while you hate me today, tomorrow you will be grateful that your life crossed paths with mine.”
Abilities
Leech Therapy
Throw a jar of leeches that attach to enemies, dealing spirit damage over time and eating away at the duration of enemy buffs.
Lore
A respected pillar at the Marble Hill Possession Ward, Nurse Harrow has dedicated her life to combating the horrors of supernatural possession. A blend of care, severity, and detached pragmatism; Harrow has been called a saint by some of her patients, and a cruel governess by others. Both are probably true.
But while any sane person would question how and why Harrow keeps the pain of her patients stored in her medical bag, none can question the results of her treatment program... cruel though it may be.
What They Seek
Hurry back to the ward to watch over her patients
When she speaks of the ritual, it is only ever of finishing it and ending it, never of curing or saving anyone: setting out, it is “It’s time to finish the ritual” and “We’re so close to ending this”; at a setback, “It’s the price we have to pay,” and if the other side got some souls, so what, “the objective was all that mattered.” To Billy she says flatly that she does not care about him, and grants only that he can be of use.
She draws a firm line with the Patrons: the ritual she will finish, but helping the Patrons is out of the question.
“Me help the patrons? You must be mad.”
“我帮守护神?你疯了吧。”TL
Both Patrons are courting Nurse Harrow

The Archmother

Her knowledge will lift up all of New York and make her the city’s cure, and the burden of her patients’ pain, which she feels as her own, will be eased.

Biography
She carries a medical bag, and her step is unhurried, yet her gaze reaches the bedside before her feet do. Patients of the Marble Hill Possession Ward call her a saint; others call her a cruel governess. Her own account is far simpler: those who hate her today will be grateful tomorrow that their lives crossed paths with hers.
She does not expect anyone to like her. What she wants is for people to live, and to live as she instructs.
Origins
Harrow’s post is the Marble Hill Possession Ward, which takes in only the possessed, children not least among them. Her days are made of rounds, dispensing medicine and visiting hours, and once visiting hours are over, the annoying family members must be shown out of the patient’s room.
“Time to make my rounds.”
“该去巡房了。”TL
Some of the children on her ward have since grown up, and she still remembers them. When Violet mentioned that her friend Nick Tsai had been Harrow’s patient as a boy, Harrow first demanded his name, then rattled it all off at once: poor posture, dirty fingernails, a pet hamster named Jellybean. He was fairly obnoxious, she said, but she was glad to hear he survived treatment.
“Ah. Nicholas. The boy with poor posture, dirty fingernails and a pet hamster named Jellybean. He was fairly obnoxious but I'm glad to hear he survived treatment.”
“啊,尼古拉斯。那个驼背、指甲缝里全是泥、养了只叫软糖豆的仓鼠的男孩。他相当讨人厌,不过听说他挺过了治疗,我很欣慰。”TL
Her methods are old-fashioned. Bloodletting, leeches, bad humors: the words are never far from her lips. She marvels that there was a time when modern medicine turned its nose up at leeches, and says the classics remain classics for a reason. Parents always whine whenever she pulls the leeches out.
Pay is the other thing she is forever bringing up. She says she long ago learned how to adapt to not being properly funded, and when she picks up souls left lying on the ground, she sighs in passing that she is tragically underpaid.
“I am tragically underpaid”
“我的薪水少得可怜。”TL
She learned her craft from a teacher. When Seven asked whether she had been stationed in Lost Whisper, she said she had not, but she knew someone who was. His name was Edmund Volker, and the two of them shared a mentor.
“His name was Edmund Volker. We shared a mentor.”
“他叫埃德蒙·沃尔克。我们师出同门。”TL
Last of all, there is the medical bag. She keeps her patients’ pain inside it, and stores it up for a long time. When she speaks of it, she sounds like someone describing a tool whose use was planned long ago: she has been storing this pain for a reason; when she takes away pain, it has to be placed somewhere.
“When I take away pain, it has to be placed somewhere”
“我夺走别人的痛苦,它总得有个去处。”TL
Old Friends and Foes
Seven: Each Sees Through the Other’s Arrogance
Seven calls doctors small-minded fools who wish to play god; her reply is flat: it’s a good thing she is a nurse and not a doctor, then. He demanded to know how many of her patients she had put down. None, she answered; if a patient is fully subsumed, she presents her findings to the ward, the family and the authorities, and they decide. Seven sneered that this was a convenient way to pretend her hands were clean. We call them ethics, she said.
Nurse Harrow and Seven, exchange 2

How many of your 'patients' have you put down?

None. In the regrettable case a patient is fully subsumed with no chance for restoration, I present my findings to the ward, the family and the authorities. They decide what happens next.

What a convenient way to pretend your hands are clean.

We call them ethics, Seven. Perhaps adopting them would have saved you some troubles in life.
Further on, Seven did unbend a little: he supposed she was used to doing what she was told, and perhaps she would not be useless after all. Her only reply was “How charming.”
“I suppose you are used to doing what your told, perhaps you won't be useless after all.”
“想必你习惯了听命行事,或许你终究不会毫无用处。”TL
Still, the two never came to terms. Seven says her air of authority is meaningless to him; she says: you don’t get to play God, that’s my job. And in the end he leaves her with a parting line: “Physician, heal thyself.”
“You don't get to play God Seven… that's my job”
“柒,你没资格扮演上帝,那是我的工作。”TL
“"Physician, heal thyself."”
““医生,先医治你自己。””TL
Kelvin: A Healer She Cannot Trust
When Kelvin said he was here to help, she said she looked forward to him proving it. Later she told him outright that he had let an entire expedition die on his watch, and she was not about to place her well-being in his hands. He answered, “You weren’t there,” and she came straight back: and you don’t remember, so spare me your indignation.
Nurse Harrow and Kelvin, exchange 3

You don't look happy.

You let an entire expedition die on your watch, forgive me for not being overjoyed to place my well-being in your hands.

You weren't there.

And you don't remember, so spare me your indignation.
Even so, when he pulled her through, she still called him ever the gentleman, and said she would not forget it.
“Ever the gentleman Kelvin”
“一如既往的绅士,开尔文。”TL
Haze: A Rare Fellow Professional
Haze is one of the few partners who puts her at ease. She said she was relieved to be paired with a professional; Haze answered that the feeling was mutual.
“I'm relieved to be paired with a professional.”
“能和专业人士搭档,我松了口气。”TL
When the two stand on opposite sides, Harrow says she doesn’t care if Haze works for the government, these people are under her protection; the OSIC can investigate all they want, her ward’s practices are all above board. Haze, for her part, says the families of New York need Harrow, not the Patrons.
Violet: A Child Who Doesn’t Deal with Professionals
Violet said Harrow reminded her of one of her professors at Jamie West. Harrow asked whether that meant she had loved the teacher or been terrified of her, and Violet owned to both. Later Violet wanted to hear some stories; Harrow said there were none she was sharing with her, and added that Violet was a child who doesn’t deal with professionals.
“That's because you’re a child who doesn't deal with professionals”
“那是因为你是个没跟专业人士打过交道的孩子。”TL
Violet has painted her portrait, and said she made her look more professional than murderous; then again, she has also said she kind of enjoyed smacking the judgment off Harrow’s face. Harrow’s own philosophy: “Spare the rod, spoil the child.”
“Good, good, I made her look more professional than murderous.”
“好,好,我把她画得更专业,少了点杀气。”TL
“Spare the rod, spoil the child.”
“不打不成器。”TL
Solomon: The Man Who Asks Where the Pain Goes
Solomon asked what she does with all the pain she siphons off her patients. Redistribute it, she answered. To where? To where it can do the least harm. Pressed further, she said only that it was not his concern.
“To where it can do the least harm.”
“分配到伤害最小的地方。”TL
She can see, too, that the old man hides his true nature.
Billy and the Rat King: Allies She Needn’t Like
When Billy said he doesn’t trust doctors, she said he evidently wished to have a monopoly on being an asshole, and that this was just an observation. Later she laid it out plainly: I don’t care about you, I’m not going to pretend to care about you, but I’m also not going to pretend that you’re useless. Billy said: alright, I’m in.
“Billy. I don't care about you. I'm not going to pretend to care about you. But I'm also not going to pretend that you're useless and that we can't help each other survive the ritual. So are we going to work together or not.”
“比利。我不在乎你,也不打算假装在乎你。但我同样不会假装你毫无用处,假装我们不能互相帮助熬过这场仪式。所以,我们到底合不合作。”TL
The Rat King complained that she reeks of the umbral, and she pressed him at once: he could smell it? She also spotted at a glance one of his little rodents foaming at the mouth.
Paradox: The Thief Who Wants Her Bag
Paradox is forever wanting to know what is in the bag, and says she is going to steal it. Harrow’s answer: if you’re hellbent on losing your sanity, who am I to stop you. The two have also talked about dry wit: Paradox said she seemed tense; not tense, Harrow said, focused, and added that Paradox did not seem to understand dry wit.
Victor: A Young Man Who Knows How to Take Instruction
Victor guessed she was the type to throw him in a padded cell and then lose the key. She said she would never lose the key of anyone in her charge, and then declared all forgiven. She took him to be afraid of the leeches, observing that many undead fear worms; he denied it, saying he just figured she wouldn’t be interested in collecting embalming fluid. Her only verdict: a most vile humor indeed.
“I would never 'lose the key' of someone in my charge. But regardless, I'm here for the Ritual, not prospective patients.”
“我绝不会“弄丢钥匙”,把我负责的人关在里面。不过无论如何,我来这里是为了仪式,不是为了物色病人。”TL
“It's not fear, just figured you wouldn't be interested in collecting embalming fluid.”
“不是怕,只是觉得您大概没兴趣收集防腐液。”TL
Celeste: A Stranger on the Subway
Dressed as she is, Celeste puts Harrow in mind of someone about to work a children’s birthday party, and Harrow asked whether what Celeste was asking the Patron for was how to make a better balloon animal. When Celeste asked whether she ever smiles, Harrow asked back whether Celeste ever shuts up, and then spelled it out: they are not friends, not even co-workers, only strangers on the subway.
“Celeste, we are not friends, we are not even co-workers. We are people who's paths are crossing for a brief moment. Strangers on the subway. You are not entitled to my thoughts or opinions so just focus on the task at hand and stop trying to make small talk because it's neither asked for nor appreciated.”
“赛凌,我们不是朋友,甚至不是同事。我们只是路过彼此一小会儿的人,地铁上的陌生人。你无权知道我的想法和看法,所以专心做眼前的事,别再没话找话了,没人要听,也没人领情。”TL
Viscous: The Intern She Wants
Viscous asked whether she was actually a nurse or on her way to a costume party. Her verdict on the goo: not malicious, just incompetent. She also called him a fascinating creature, and means to look properly into the healing properties of the Cube. When the Cube pulled her through, she announced on the spot that he must become her intern.
“Viscous, you must become my intern…”
“魔液,你必须来当我的实习生……”TL
Dynamo and Grey Talon: Men Worth Expecting More Of
When Dynamo tended to her, she let her guard down for once, saying it was nice to be taken care of for a change. Of this professor out of Columbia University she expects a great deal, and when he disappoints her she says so plainly: she had been hoping they would be friends.
She has praised Grey Talon for a fine shot, too, saying she sees why he led the Baxter Society; yet when he turned his bow on her, she raged: how dare you hunt me!
“I see why you led the Baxter Society, Talon”
“难怪你能带领拜克斯特协会,灰爪。”TL
Anecdotes
The Creed. Pain is part of the process: she says it again and again. Nor does she mince words about her enemies: it’s not malpractice if you intend to hurt them.
“It’s not malpractice if you intend to hurt them.”
“只要你是想伤害他们,那就不算医疗事故。”TL
The Oath. Not everyone deserves to be saved, she says, but her oath is her oath. She also says she doesn’t lose patients; she bends death to her will.
“Not everyone deserves to be saved, but my oath is my oath…”
“并非人人都值得被救,但我的誓言就是誓言……”TL
“I don't lose patients, I bend death to my will.”
“我从不失去病人,我让死亡听我的话。”TL
Thanks. She probably won’t even get a thank you, and she knows it. She herself is not sparing with thanks, though: Dynamo, McGinnis, Grey Talon and Holliday have all heard hers.
Discipline. She treats her opponents like badly brought-up children. Of Graves, she says somebody wants attention from their parents; of Mina, that she should have been spanked more as a child. For Warden she has another tone altogether: she appreciates his conviction, and calls him principled, disciplined.
“Well somebody wants attention from their parents, now don't they.”
“哦,有人想引起父母的注意呢,是不是?”TL
“He was principled. Disciplined.”
“他有原则,也很自律。”TL
Mercy. Of Victor, she says he will be back, but she bought them all some time; and also that sometimes death is a mercy.
“Victor will be back, but I bought us some time”
“维克多会回来的,不过我为我们争取到了一点时间。”TL
Not Up for Debate. When Venator questioned her methods, she told him conviction is not a substitute for common sense, and to stay out of her business.
“Conviction is not a substitute for common sense”
“信念可代替不了常识。”TL
Fairfax. When Deadman Danny pitched her on Fairfax Industries, ready to revolutionize the possessed child industry, she asked whether he always runs his mouth like this, and said she could exorcize him from that husk.
“Do you always run your mouth like this?”
“你一向这么滔滔不绝吗?”TL
Composure. She says she has seen things you cannot fathom, and fears no spirit, demon, or unruly family member. Yet when the mole man of Mo & Krill got hold of her, she still shouted for someone to kill this damn mole, and in the next breath said she really should get a mole man for an orderly.
“Someone kill this damn mole!”
“谁把这该死的鼹鼠给我干掉!”TL
High Tea. That time with the Doorman, she worried he would remember it, and said she hoped he wouldn’t take it too personally, because she loves high tea at The Baroness.
“Hope he doesn't take it too personally, I love high tea at The Baroness”
“希望他别太往心里去,我可是很喜欢在巴隆妮斯酒店喝下午茶的。”TL
