New York
纽约
New York is a cursed city. After the Eclipse, the Astral Gate opened, the gaze of the Patrons fell upon its streets, and the Ritual came to be played out here. From the skyscrapers of Manhattan to the subways and the rooftops, everyone who claims to belong here is convinced that they alone are its true master.
Lady Geist is certain this city will not forget her name.
“New York won't forget my name.”
“纽约不会忘记我的名字。”TL
Infernus is a native too — New York born and raised, by his own account — and he shows intruders no mercy, telling them to get the hell out of his city. Abrams’s feelings for the place are far more tangled; he admits that sometimes he simply hates this city.
“I hate this city sometimes…”
“有时候我真讨厌这座城市……”
There is no end of people laying claim to New York. Wraith and Mo & Krill both say it belongs to them: the former says it is hers alone, the latter that it belongs to the pair of them.
“New York belongs to me.”
“纽约属于我”
“New York belongs to us.”
“纽约属于我们”
Others have appointed themselves its guardians. Ivy, Shiv and Warden have each in turn declared the city under their protection, while Haze has no courtesy to spare for Warden: New York, she says, doesn’t need him.
“New York is under my protection!”
“纽约在我的保护之下”
“New York doesn't need you, Warden. I'm here.”
“纽约不需要你,沃督。我在这里”
Nor is there any shortage of ambition with designs on the city. Yamato declares that New York belongs to the 7th Moon; Mina has her eye on the seat of power in the Barony of New York, and means to make the whole city her playground.
For outsiders, New York’s welcome always comes with a warning. Mirage, on his first visit, hadn’t yet had a chance to see much, and what he had seen struck him as pleasant enough — yet when Abrams and Mo & Krill knocked him down, all they left him with was “Welcome to New York.” Drifter once hunted here, and has now been told that it isn’t his hunting ground anymore; Kelvin and Viscous have likewise been shown the door by the locals, the one urged to leave, the other finding it a scary place. The Doorman calls it fascinating, because you never know who you’re going to meet; Solomon says it really has something for everyone.
Kelvin is no complete stranger, though. He left New York and came back, and tried to find someone here when he did; he makes no secret of calling this city his playground, yet Infernus has still told him to his face that New York isn’t the place for him.
“This city is my playground…”
“这座城市是我的游乐场…”
Deadman Danny talks about New York like an eager host. He welcomes Yamato to the city and offers to show Mirage the New York skyline; as for Viscous, he tells him he picked a hell of a time to visit.
“You picked a helluva time to visit New York, Viscous”
“魔液,你挑了个糟透了的时候来纽约。”TL
Violet came here from elsewhere, yet she treats the whole of New York as her canvas. She marvels that the city keeps getting weirder, and that her parents may have been right to be paranoid about New York after all — yet she still means to put its strangeness into her paintings.
“New York is my canvas”
“纽约就是我的画布。”TL
“Every time I think this city can't get weirder...”
“每次我以为这座城市不可能更怪了……”TL
