Manhattan is the island at the heart of New York, ringed by water on every side. Vyper once reminded herself that she was on an island in the metaphorical sense and a literal one as well, and that she needed to be careful.

The island’s nights belong to its bars. Infernus tends bar here, and he knows so many people that Drifter couldn’t resist teasing him: was he friends with every bartender in Manhattan? When Apollo said he had heard what he could do, the bartender asked back whether he meant making the best sidecar in Manhattan.
The people of its streets come in every temper. Silver warned Lady Geist that if she kept running her mouth, she would be the prettiest little corpse on Manhattan.

Vyper also once said, with some distaste, that she wasn’t looking to make friends with an old guy who carries a bow around Manhattan; the old man in question was Grey Talon.
Yet this ground is coveted, too. Mina calls Manhattan her feeding grounds, and has even declared that it belongs to her.

For uncanny creatures, the island is just as dangerous. The Doorman once warned Rem that if he kept walking the streets, it was only a matter of time before he ended up vivisected on a table of the United States Federal Government, and urged him to stay at the Baroness, which could offer him safety and comfort.
“Rem, if you continue to walk the streets of Manhattan it is only a matter of time before you end up vivisected on a government table. But if you stay here at The Baroness, I can provide safety and comfort.”
