The Vatican

The Vatican is the authority of the Holy See, far across the sea. In the occult world it is best known as the power that sends out the Venators: when evil stirred in New York, it was a priest who was sent.

Venator is this power’s most conspicuous representative. He says the Vatican called on him to come, that he has taken the Venator’s Oath, and that his life belongs not to him but to service. Shiv calls him the “Vatican assassin,” and the Father’s answer to Shiv is a verdict that brooks no argument.

“You have many crimes to answer for, Shiv.”

“你犯了很多罪需要交代，希弗”

The Holy See’s reach is long, and it has turned many against it. Haze says flatly that the Vatican oversteps.

“The Vatican oversteps.”

“梵蒂冈越界了”

McGinnis simply states where she stands: she doesn’t take orders from the Vatican.

“I don't take orders from the Vatican.”

“我可不听梵蒂冈的命令。”TL

Kelvin’s feelings are more complicated. He never thought he’d be at war with the Vatican.

“I never thought I'd be at war with the Vatican.”

“我从没想过我会与梵蒂冈开战”

Nor have the Holy See’s hunters ever let down their guard. In the Venator’s eyes, if Kelvin can’t even say what happened to him, he is no one to be trusted.

“You don't know what you are Kelvin, and if you don't know what happened to you, then I can't trust you. Not fully.”

“你不知道自己是什么，开尔文。你连自己遭遇了什么都不清楚，我就没法信任你，至少不能完全信任。”TL

Others pay this authority no mind at all: Abrams berates the Father for daring to show his face in his city; Mo & Krill declare they don’t answer to it; Baba mocks that it needs to find better boogeymen; and Billy jokes that the Vatican is coming for him now.

“We don't answer to the Vatican.”

“我们不需要向梵蒂冈汇报”

Celeste is especially baffled. She cannot fathom why the Holy See has turned its gaze on her.

“Why is the Vatican after me?”

“为什么梵蒂冈要追捕我？”

Whatever the truth, so long as a Venator still walks the streets and alleys of New York, this shadow cast by the Holy See will not lift.
