Behind her name stands the OSIC. She dedicated her life to it, she says, and she won’t fail them.

She has passed judgment on its handiwork, too: she has been, she says, forged into a weapon.

“I've been forged into a weapon.”

She belongs to the Sandman Division, and in that division no one is called an assassin. When Lady Geist remarked that she does her best to avoid state sponsored assassins, Haze corrected her on the spot: assassins work in the private sector, and when you’re federally employed, you’re called something else — an “asset.”

“Assassins work in the private sector. When you're federally employed you're called an asset.”

She is just as clear about how the work is divided between departments. She told Graves that Curators care about things and Sandmen care about people, so until she becomes a threat to national security, Graves is not Haze’s problem.

“Curator's care about things, Sandmen care about people. So until you become a threat to national security you're not my problem.”

Above all of this stands a man named Marlowe. He is her handler, and she works for him. Speaking of him to Paige, she took care to add that he is only “loosely” the inspiration for Sephren.

“I work for Marlowe, who is loosely, and again I say loosely, the inspiration for Sephren.”

Her skills are not confined to dreams. When someone takes her for helpless without her guns, she asks whether they think she isn’t trained in hand to hand combat. And once she has struck, she says she doesn’t need her guns to kill you.

Her private life is as thin as a sheet of paper, but it is not blank. When Viscous asked what she does for fun, she said she plays the cello. Talking chess with Solomon, she allowed that she is decent in her friend group, though she may just be the best of the worst.

Old Friends and Foes

Marlowe: Her Handler

Marlowe’s name comes up around her far too often. Baba asked whether he had retired yet and called him “the old boogeyman”; when Haze pressed her on how she knew him, Baba told her only to ask the man herself.

“The old boogeyman doesn’t talk about me? I'm hurt.”

After she strikes, her thoughts often turn to reporting back to him. Having brought down the Doorman, she said Marlowe is going to want to hear about this.

Grey Talon: An Old Friend Met Again

When Grey Talon came face to face with her, the first thing she called him was Wesley: it had been a while, she said, and she was sorry about Nathan. Grey Talon thanked her and said they had gotten her card. She said these were not the best circumstances for a reunion; this, he said, was likely the only circumstance in which they would ever have one.

She asked Grey Talon whether he was back with the Baxter Society; he said no, this was personal. Later, when it came to blows, she brought him down and said: be with your son.

“Be with your son.”

Shiv: An Eye for Knives

She recognized Shiv as Wesley’s protégé, and told him he had a lot to live up to. When she asked how he had met Wesley, Shiv said he didn’t have time to get into it now, but if she was open for a cocktail later he could fill her in on all the gory details; she answered that she could be persuaded. Later, when it came to blows, she left Shiv with a single word: amateurs.

“I could be persuaded.”

Drifter: The One Being Used

Drifter thought the OSIC was finally coming for him. No, she said, the OSIC was using him; if they were coming for him, he would already be dead. He urged her to smile, saying she was going to like killing people with him, and she answered that being good at something and liking something are two different things.

“Being good at something and liking something are two different things.”

When he fell, she brought up the Viscount: looks like he is going to owe the OSIC a favor.

“Looks like the Viscount is going to owe the OSIC a favor.”

Vindicta: One Who Stops at Nothing

Haze invited Vindicta to join the OSIC and was turned down flat. Later she warned Vindicta that martyring John Hathorne would only galvanize the Friends of Humanity.

“Your war with the Friends of Humanity. Martyring John Hathorne will galvanize them.”

And when the moment came to turn their weapons on each other, she said that this woman was no avenger: she was a domestic terrorist.

“She wasn't an avenger, she was a domestic terrorist.”

Rem: A Name She Won’t Answer To

Rem calls her mom. She says she’s not.

“I'm not.”

“我不是”

Baba once said she had seen her in the park with her kid the other day, and Haze answered flatly: I don’t have a kid. When she brought Rem down, what she said was that she was sorry she couldn’t protect him.

“I don't have a kid.”

“I'm sorry I couldn't protect you.”

Ivy: One Who Shouldn’t Join

Ivy asked whether she would be a good fit for the OSIC. Haze said no, because Ivy has a big heart: the bad days would stay with her, and in their line of work you can’t let them.

“Of course not. But it means the bad days would stay with you. And in our line of work you can't let it.”

“当然不是。但这意味说，糟糕的日子会一直伴随着你。而我们这行，绝对不能让这些负面情绪影响到你”

Yamato: Eyes on the 7th Moon

Yamato snapped at the dreamwalker to stay out of her head, and Haze said she doesn’t take orders from the 7th Moon. With Yamato she is perfectly frank: right now the 7th Moon is a small operation, and the OSIC wouldn’t waste resources on it; once it gets big enough to stop being a gang and start being a cartel, her superiors will start thinking about having her kill Yamato in her sleep.

“Well, if it gets big enough it stops being a gang and starts being a cartel. That's usually when my superiors start thinking about having me kill you in your sleep.”

Lady Geist: An Open Case

The moment she sees Lady Geist, she raises the Oathkeeper issue: if it isn’t resolved, the OSIC will have to intervene. Geist replied only, “It will be.” Then Haze told her not to worry, she wasn’t there for her today; Geist seized at once on “Today?”, and Haze said only: forget I said anything.

“Don't worry Lady Geist, I'm not here for you today.”

“别担心，盖斯特夫人，我今天不是来帮你的”

Calico: Neither Gives Ground

Calico asked whether Haze knew who she was. Haze said she did, and added that she was going to kill her before the day was out, so making small talk seemed a little pointless. Calico brought up Marlowe, and the last Sandman she had met on the job.

“Hope you put up more of a fight than the last Sandman I met on the job.”

Abrams: The Man Behind the Doors

She urged Abrams to work for the OSIC; Abrams said they already had enough people who can kick down doors. What they don’t have enough of, she said, is guys who care what doors are getting kicked down.

“We do. We don't have enough guys who care what doors are getting kicked down.”

“是的。我们没有足够的人去关心哪些门被踢倒了”

Deadman Danny: One She Thanked

Deadman Danny told her that if she ever wanted to go into the private sector, Eldritch Tactical Solutions, a fine subsidiary of Fairfax Industries, is always looking for operatives like her. She said she isn’t psychotic enough for that; when he defended the company, telling her not to let media slander color her view of a fine company, her only reply was that she has operated in North Ixia. Never mind, then, he said. Not that she has only a cold shoulder for him. She told him to his face that a lot of people think he’s a joke, but that she has a lot of friends who would have died if he hadn’t defined best practices for handling a vorpal grenade; he said he was glad he had made a difference, then promptly handed the credit back to the company. Later, when she brought him down, she said he was loyal, she’d give him that — and then complained that Fairfax standards are slipping.

“I've operated in North Ixia.”

Violet: The Student She Told to Stay Close

The first time she sized up Violet, Violet asked why she was looking at her like that; Haze said she was just trying to figure out whether Violet was an “asset,” then added that that’s not what she meant by asset. Hearing Violet say she was just an art student, she said she would take her word for it. Another time she declared that Violet didn’t belong here; when Violet shot back that she had the same right to be here, Haze simply stated who she was: a federal operative. It was on a zipline, too, that she saw how badly Violet was scared, sighed, and told her to stay close, saying she would do what she could. Later, when she brought Violet down, she said the girl could be useful with the right guidance, and that sometimes she hates her job.

The Healer Beside Her: A Rare Professional

Teamed with her, Nurse Harrow said she was relieved to be paired with a professional; Haze answered, “The feeling’s mutual.” The nurse promised to do what she could to keep her in the fight, and Haze thanked her. Haze also asked whether she liked working in the possession ward. The answer: she finds saving lives immensely satisfying, even if her methods are not often appreciated. Haze said she felt the same way, and the nurse replied, I imagine you would. Later, when it came to blows, Haze brought her down, told her that was not her best work, and urged her: the families of New York need you, not the Patrons.

Anecdotes

Taxes. When Mo & Krill wondered aloud how impressed they would be to see their tax dollars at work, she told them flatly that neither of them pays taxes. When Baba complained about what her taxes were being used for, Haze’s answer was: roads, social services, international assassinations.

Humor. Asked whether today would end with an arrest, she asked back, you want me to spoil the surprise? Told that wasn’t funny, she said: I’m hilarious.

Goodnight. Before she strikes, she likes to say “Nap time” and “Sweet dreams.” Of Pocket, she said she sang him a lullaby.

“I sang Pocket a lullaby.”

Chess. Solomon asked whether she plays chess. She said yes, though she imagines he is better.

Wyoming. Mirage hoped this was just the beginning of a partnership with her nation; she said she is not a politician, and her approval will neither help nor hinder the Djinn’s chances of buying Wyoming. Later, when she brought Mirage down, she declared: how dare he try to circumvent official channels — and in the same breath, I respect you.

The File. Holliday hadn’t expected to have a file. We’re the OSIC, said Haze; of course there’s a file.

After Death. After bringing down Celeste, her thought was that the OSIC is going to want an autopsy; bringing down Apollo, she wondered with a wry smile who they were going to frame for this.

Survival. She told Dynamo that his survival may not be a top priority, but it is still a priority. Facing death herself, she says she is a soldier, not a martyr.

A Shopkeeper’s Guilty Conscience. In New York even shopkeepers fear catching her eye; one went so far as to ask her: the OSIC aren’t investigating me, right?
