The Brownstone
褐石屋
Where the old case unfolded
An ordinary brownstone house in New York City should never have been known for anything. But between Venator of the Venators and the detective Abrams, it is an old wound that words do not easily reach, and what happened there has come to be called the Brownstone Incident.
Neither man has ever told in detail what happened inside that house. The detective has always held that there was a way to save more.
“There was a way to save more.”
“有个办法能救更多的”
Venator’s answer was hard and final: that way, as he saw it, meant risking more, and if it had failed, God help them all. He took everything that happened in the house upon himself alone.
“No there was a way to risk more, and god help us all if we failed. I don't blame you for not having the stomach to do what needed to be done, but sleep easy knowing that what happened in that brownstone is my burden alone not yours.”
“不,还有办法冒更大的风险,如果失败了,上帝保佑我们所有人。我不怪你没有勇气去做该做的事,但你要知道,那栋褐石屋里发生的一切,只关乎我一个人,与你无关”
The detective, for his part, counts it as a debt of his own, and the other man’s absolution has given him no peace.
“I should have stopped you.”
“我早该阻止你的”
