Hathorne Family

The Hathorne family are the descendants of John Hathorne. In the Salem Witch Trials, John Hathorne’s trial took the life of Vindicta; his bloodline has gone on for centuries since.

The family has long since ceased to be known by its name alone. Many of its descendants changed their name after they married and vanished into ordinary households, leaving any search with nowhere to begin. Vindicta knows this all too well:

“You make it sound so simple. A lot of them changed their name after they got married.”

“你说得倒轻巧。他们好多人结婚后都改了姓。”TL

Her vengeance has never been confined to one man or one place. She once mentioned to another that she had shot Hathorne’s brother on a speedboat:

“I shot Hathorne's brother while he was day drinking on a speedboat.”

“霍桑的兄弟白天在快艇上喝酒时，我开枪击倒了他”

Not everyone approves of this reckoning. Celeste says plainly that killing everyone with the last name Hathorne isn’t a goal; it’s an obsession:

“Killing everyone with the last name Hathorne isn't a goal, it's an obsession.”

“杀光所有姓霍桑的人不是目标，那是执念。”TL

Both Patrons have taken the measure of this hatred of hers. The Hidden King promises her that once the ritual is complete, Hathorne’s bloodline will be eradicated from this planet:

“Complete the ritual, Vindicta, and Hathorne's bloodline will be eradicated from this planet.”

“完成仪式，薇妲，霍桑的血脉就会从这个星球上消失”

The Archmother names the very same price, saying that Hathorne’s bloodline will pay for his sins:

“Hathorne's bloodline will pay for his sins. All you need to do is summon The Archmother.”

“霍桑的血脉将为他的罪孽付出代价。你只需要召唤源祖”

This hatred can wound bystanders too. Crossing paths with Vindicta, Baba was at pains to deny any tie to the family:

“Do I look like a Hathorne?”

“我看起来像霍桑家的人吗？”TL

Some only look on. Violet understands why Vindicta hates the family, but counts it as an account between Vindicta and Hathorne alone:

“This is between you and Hathorne, not me”

“这是你和霍桑之间的事，跟我没关系。”TL

She even hopes that a portrait from her brush might give a Hathorne somewhere a nightmare.
