John Hathorne

Centuries ago, in the witch-hunting frenzy he stirred up in Salem, John Hathorne took many lives, and Vindicta was one of them. She was tried and executed, and he was the man who persecuted her. In time his name became a byword for witch-hunting and bigotry; his descendants founded the Friends of Humanity, carrying on the old trials under a new name.

Now the name is back in the newspapers of New York. The New York Oracle calls him a “political firebrand, or the founder of a new inquisition,” and has run an exclusive interview with him.

He is a deeply controversial speaker, due before long to take the stage at Columbia University. A failed assassination attempt has already left the organizers uneasy.

“Isn't that where John Hathorne will be speaking soon?”

To Vindicta, he is the source of all hatred. More than once she has sworn to finish him with her own hands, and she has already struck at the Hathornes; not even his brother was spared.

She does not wage her war alone. Grey Talon has sworn to come for him as well, saying that the death he brings is nothing compared to what lies in store for Hathorne.

Haze sees a danger of another kind: once Hathorne is dead he becomes a martyr, and a martyr would only galvanize the Friends of Humanity.

The shadow of the name falls everywhere. Facing off against Vindicta, Baba asked her pointedly whether she looked like a Hathorne; the Doorman, for his part, declares that you can’t put a bullet through hate, and that Hathorne will win.

“You can't put a bullet through hate, Vindicta. Hathorne will win.”
