Salem Witch Trials

The Salem Witch Trials were a witch hunt of the seventeenth century. In that age, a single charge of “trafficking with spirits” was enough to cost a person their life.

Many in Salem were dragged before the court amid fear and suspicion, and among them was the young Vindicta. She was unjustly condemned, and executed. Years later, this is how she remembered her helplessness:

“I was a child when they unjustly condemned me…powerless in every sense of the word. But now in death I've become all that they feared and more.”

“他们不公地定我的罪时,我还只是个孩子……在各方面都无能为力。可如今死过一次,我已成了他们所畏惧的一切,甚至更甚。”TL

She says plainly that she died for being falsely accused of trafficking with spirits.

“I was executed in the witch trials.”

“我在猎巫审判中被处决。”TL

— Vindicta, to Graves

Many who came after have heard the story. Apollo had read about Salem, and found it horrific, and impossibly human; Vindicta only answered that he was correct on both counts.

“I read about Salem. It sounds horrific. And impossibly human.”

“我读到过关于塞勒姆的事。听起来很恐怖,而且太符合人性了”

— Apollo, to Vindicta

Graves once asked whether she had been alive in the 1600s, and learned that she had died in the witch trials. Vindicta, for her part, rebuked her to her face for brazenly walking about with a lich hand; Graves answered only that times are different, and she replied that they were not different enough.

“I died for being falsely accused of trafficking with spirits, and here you are brazenly walking about with a lich hand.”

“我因被诬陷与亡灵勾结而死,而你却大摇大摆地带着英灵之手四处走动。”TL

The Patrons remember it as well, and both use it to court Vindicta. The Archmother says that eighteen souls joined her in Salem, and that today she will have her satisfaction.

“18 souls joined you in Salem. Today you will have your satisfaction.”

“18个灵魂在塞勒姆加入了你。今天你会得到满足”

— The Archmother, to Vindicta

The Hidden King, for his part, says that soon they will answer for the crimes of Salem.

“Vindicta… soon they will answer for the crimes of Salem.”

“薇妲… 很快他们就要为塞勒姆的罪行付出代价”

— The Hidden King, to Vindicta

This injustice is held to be the wellspring of Vindicta’s vengeance, and one of the reasons she would later make enemies of the Friends of Humanity; for the full story, see Vindicta's war on the Friends of Humanity.
