Bear Pit

The Bear Pit is an underground fighting ring in New York. The name calls to mind iron cages and wild beasts, but one visitor who went to see it came away complaining:

“I heard that you fight in the bear pit, but when I went, there were no bears, it wasn't even a pit! It was a circle with two people punching each other!”

“我听说你在熊坑里打架，但我去的时候，根本没有熊，那甚至都不是坑！就是两个人在圈里互相打架！”

It was here that Lash made his name as “Bear Pit champion.” Whenever he introduces the place to others, this is how he puts it:

“It's not a literal Bear Pit, it's a fight club where the winner gets the honor of losing to me.”

“这不是一个字面意义上的熊坑，它是格斗俱乐部，赢家会因为输给我而获得荣誉”

He is forever bringing up the title. He once declared that Silver wouldn’t last three minutes in the Bear Pit; Apollo, for his part, has boasted that he could take the title from him any day he wanted. And when someone does put him down, the comeback is often this:

“Who's the Bear Pit champion now?!”

“现在谁才是熊坑冠军？！”TL

For others, the Bear Pit means a living. Bebop has thrown punches in the pit. He told Apollo frankly that fighting for points is very different from fighting to eat:

“It's not a knock on you, I'm sure you're a helluva talent. But fighting for points is very different than fighting to eat.”

“我不是在贬低你，我相信你天赋异禀。但是为得分而战和为温饱而战完全是两码事”

He has also said that if all goes well today, he won’t need to fight in the pit anymore.

“All goes well today I won't need to fight in the pit anymore”

“今天一切顺利我就不用再在坑里打架了”

The Bear Pit has left grudges behind, too. Celeste has never forgotten what Lash did to Lenny here, and when she struck, a single sentence made the reason plain:

“That’s for what you did to Lenny in the Bear Pit.”

“这是对你在熊坑里对莱尼所作所为的惩罚”

Pocket has joked about the Bear Pit as well, saying that if he doesn’t retake his company, at least he has a future there.

“Well, if I don't retake my company at least I have a future in The Bear Pit.”

“好吧，就算我没能夺回我的公司，至少我在“熊坑”还有前途”

Deadman Danny, too, speaks of the champion with a measure of respect. To his mind, getting to watch the champion up close is a privilege:

“Getting to watch The Bear Pit champion up close is a privilege”

“能近距离看熊坑冠军出手，是种荣幸。”TL

And when he downs the champion, he holds up that very word, “champion,” as proof of his gear’s might:

“Not even the Bear Pit champion can stand against the might of the Chimera Mark One”

“连熊坑的冠军也挡不住奇美拉 Mark 1 的威力。”TL

Even a painter has her eye on the place. Violet thinks someone should be doing fight posters for the Bear Pit, and grumbles that no one is paying her to paint it:

“They should pay me to paint the bear pit…”
