Origins

She is a werewolf, and as far back as she can remember, she always has been. When Graves asked whether she liked being a werewolf, she said she didn’t know — she had never not been one — and turned the question back on the asker: how did they like being a human? When Ivy asked whether she was a human that turns into a wolf or a wolf that turns into a human, she said she had never really thought about it, and was told that in her shoes, that would be all the asker could think about.

“I've never not been one, imagine if I asked you how you liked being a human?”

“我从来没不是过狼人。要是我问你当人喜不喜欢，你能答上来吗？”TL

“So are you a human that turns into a wolf or a wolf that turns into a human?”

“那你是变成狼的人，还是变成人的狼？”TL

As for that fabled “incredible intuition,” a good nose has a great deal to do with it. Her quarry can hide in the shadows all they want, she says; she can still smell their fear, and once she has their scent, there is little hiding left for them. She caught a whiff of cinnamon around Bebop, and she can smell a fed like Haze a mile away.

“They can hide in shadows all they want, I can still smell their fear.”

Nor does the moon seem to rule her. “Who needs a full moon…” she once muttered, and the Patrons, each in their own telling, both say she has never been a slave to the moon. When Haze asked whether she could control the beast, she said she was good on lycanthropy, and “eh” on degeneracy. Yet the moment the full force of the change comes over her, she cries out in dismay, “Oh god not again…” — she thought she had this under control.

“Who needs a full moon…”

“谁还需要满月…”

She doesn’t do this job out of a sense of justice; she does it to pay rent. Seven heard her say as much, Bebop heard her bring up her car payments, and Graves heard her say she became a bounty hunter only because she always wanted to not be homeless, so she does whatever pays the most. But for all her swagger, she holds a line: when Calico urged her to take up contract killing instead, saying there’s not much of a difference, she answered that there’s a fairly large one.

“No I always wanted to not be homeless so I decided to do whatever paid the most.”

“不是。我只是一直想不流落街头，所以谁给钱多我就干谁的活。”TL

There was another road once. She has sighed over it: why does this have to be the one thing she’s good at — why couldn’t she have stuck with piano?

“Why does this have to be the one thing I'm good at? Why couldn't I have stuck with piano?”

“为什么偏偏这是我唯一擅长的事？我当初怎么没坚持弹钢琴？”TL

Liquor is the steady hum beneath her life, and so is tobacco. She owns up to her hangovers herself; when Abrams brought her down, he said that if she hadn’t been nursing a hangover, he would have been in trouble; Baba says Silver passed out drunk on the bench she loves best. The shopkeeper told Baba a tiny bottle of whiskey had been thrown in — and not to tell Silver. Her hair smells of bourbon; it was Rem who noticed.

“If she wasn't nursing a hangover, I would've been in trouble.”

“如果她不是宿醉未醒，我就麻烦了”

Her distrust of others has its reasons, too. She has said she doesn’t like people getting too close to her, and that her ex always said she was good at pushing people away. The Doorman even threw it in her face: the walls of her own making that ended friendships.

“Oh Lilah, where do I begin with someone as pathetic as you? The walls of your own making that ended friendships? The vices that you've become a slave to? Or perhaps this fantasy that one day killing Shiv and the Drifter will make up for all the lives that were lost because you just weren't good enough to stop them. I truly am spoiled for choice...”

“哦，莉拉，像你这样可悲的人，我该从哪说起呢？是你亲手筑起、毁掉了友情的高墙？还是你沦为奴隶的那些恶习？或者是你那个幻想：有朝一日杀了希弗和孤猎，就能弥补那些因为你不够强、没能阻止他们而失去的性命。我真是挑都挑不过来…”TL

Old acquaintances all call her “Lilah” — Abrams, Grey Talon, Shiv and Vyper alike. When she is on her own, she talks to herself the same way: OK, Lilah, don’t mess this up.

Old Friends and Foes

Shiv: An Old Score That Won’t Stay Buried

Shiv is the one she can least let go. When the ritual is over, she tells him, he’s hers; the Baxter Society can’t protect him, and one day he’s gonna answer for what he did. She doesn’t care what the Baxter Society says: people don’t change.

“When the ritual is over, you're mine.”

“仪式一结束，你就是我的了。”TL

Shiv’s words cut just as deep. She was never better than him, he says; she couldn’t kill him when he had nothing to live for, and she sure as hell can’t stop him now. How the feud between them began, neither has ever fully told.

“Silver: you couldn't kill me when I had nothing to live for, you sure as hell can't stop me now.”

“西尔芙：我一无所有的时候你都杀不了我，现在你更别想拦我。”TL

Drifter: Fury on a Leash

The Patron wants her to “play nice.” She told Drifter he was lucky; Drifter returned that any other day her heart would be out of her body by now. Let’s finish the ritual, she went on, and find out what happens when he doesn’t have a knife-throwing psychopath as backup. When she killed Drifter, she said she had done what the Baxter Society couldn’t.

“You're lucky the patron wants me to play nice.”

“你走运了，守护神要我和气点。”TL

“I did what The Baxter Society couldn't.”

“拜克斯特协会没办成的事，我办成了。”TL

Abrams: The Old Friend She Just Wants a Drink With

She calls Abrams “Abe,” and invited him to make some bad decisions after the ritual for old times’ sake; he begged off, and she asked when he had become so boring. Another time she asked whether he was still working the book case, and he corrected her: it’s a tome. When she brought him down, she told him they’d get some whiskey and laugh about it later.

“We'll get some whiskey and laugh about this later, Abe.”

“亚伯兰，我们待会儿喝点威士忌，好好笑一笑这件事”

Vyper: Round and Round the Chase

She catches Vyper, Vyper breaks out, and she sends her back to Rikers Island. “You can keep breaking out of Rikers all you want, I’ll keep sending your ass back there.” Vyper’s dead, she says, and momma’s making rent. Vyper, for her part, admits that when she was locked up, she was really worried Silver would die of cirrhosis before she got to stab her to death — but the Patrons, it seems, can work miracles.

“You can keep breaking out of Rykers all you want, I'll keep sending your ass back there.”

“你想从雷克岛监狱越狱多少次都行，我就把你的屁股再送回去。”TL

“It's true. When I was locked up I was really worried that you'd die of sorosis before I'd get to stab you to death, but I guess the patrons can work miracles”

Grey Talon: The Old Man Who Took Up for a Man Like That

Grey Talon has known her a long time, and says she always was a pain in the ass. She can’t believe he took up for “a man like him”; he answers only that he doesn’t owe her an explanation. After killing him, she said she almost felt bad.

“You always were a pain in the ass, Silver.”

“你向来就是个让人头疼的家伙，西尔芙。”TL

The Doorman: Kicked Out of Brunch

The Doorman remarked how nice it was to see her sober; she shot back that you get kicked out of brunch one time and everyone thinks they know you. The old her, she said, would have ripped his leg off for saying something like that; the new her just relies on the vague threat of violence. She asked for a suite at the Baroness Hotel, and the Doorman said they would see how today goes.

“Ya know the old me would've ripped your leg off for saying something like that, but the new me is just going to rely on the vague threat of violence.”

“要搁以前的我，听你这么说早把你的腿撕下来了，但现在的我只会靠隐隐约约的暴力威胁。”TL

Seven: The “Dad” Who Says She’s Wasting Her Talents

Seven berates her for squandering her talents, and she fires back, “Helluva pep talk, dad.” His answer: “You don’t know your dad.” Whether that is a joke or something else, no one can say. Her view of him, though, is plain: he is a prisoner who escaped from Lost Whisper, and he ought to be sent back.

“You don't know your dad.”

“你根本不了解你的父亲”

“You're going back to Lost Whisper, buddy.”

“你要被送回永寂黑渊去了，老兄。”TL

Rem: Hard Words, Soft Heart

She turns Rem down in so many words, first asking whether Rem can pay her; but once the tears start, she agrees to help. Of what happened with Rem, she says she’s gonna feel guilty about it later. It is the same with Ivy: once she had brought that one down, she said it felt kind of bad.

“Ok ok, I'll help, jesus.”

“好好好，我帮，天啊。”TL

Holliday: Train Wrecks Together

Holliday is after the Troubadour, so that once that’s done she can go back home; Silver has her eye on the bounty, and has told Holliday she will not be kept from it. Yet Holliday has also thanked her for backing her up, and she said only that train wrecks like them need to stick together — only to have Holliday fire right back that she is not a train wreck.

“I'm not going after one of your bounties Silver. Once I stop The Troubadour I'm going back home.”

“西尔芙，我不会去追捕你悬赏的那些人。等我干掉吟游诗人，我就回家”

Infernus, McGinnis and Kelvin: Fellow Travelers Over a Drink

She told Infernus that Hank’s lucky to have a friend like him, and proposed they summon a God and save a bar. She invited McGinnis to get a beer after the ritual and talk shit about people. Kelvin, for his part, wants to hire her as a guide to Appalachia; she warned him first that she doesn’t work cheap, then reminded him he has Geist Foundation money.

“What do you say we summon a God and save a bar?”

“怎么样，咱们去召唤个神，顺便救下一家酒吧？”TL

“Oh come on, you have Geist Foundation money!”

“得了吧，你手里可是有盖斯特基金会的钱！”TL

Anecdotes

Class. She has no patience for the rich. She sneers at Apollo as a Blackmore Academy kid, and Blackmore Academy kids are all the same; Lady Geist says her vices control her and her clothes are disgusting; Dynamo is a Columbia man, and she jeers that she thought people at Columbia were supposed to be smart.

“Blackmore Academy kids are all the same…”

Mo & Krill. Mo & Krill once let her crash at their hovel; she left vomit behind, and asked whether it came out. When they brought her down, they said that here they thought they had a good working relationship with her.

“And here I thought we had a good working relationship with her.”

Silver Bullets. Venator told her flatly that he isn’t stabbing her, period: she’s a werewolf, and he is going to shoot her with silver bullets. Both Patrons, too, have asked how hard it is to find some silver bullets and shoot her.

“I'm not stabbing you period. You're a werewolf. I'm going to shoot you with silver bullets.”

“我根本不会动手。你是狼人。我要用银弹射你”

“How hard is it to find some silver bullets and shoot her?”

“找到一些银弹对付她有多难？”

The Bounty Board. Let’s see who’s on the bounty board, she says. When Calico asked how often she takes the “or alive” part seriously, she answered: it’s happened. By her own account, she always tries to start with non-lethal methods, but usually ends up killing them.

“I try to start with non-lethal methods. Usually end up killing them, but it's nice to try.”

The Sideshow. Celeste told her the troupe’s last werewolf had retired, and there’s an opening. Silver asked back why she would want to work in a sideshow.

“You think I wanna work in a sideshow?”

New York. The 7th Moon is never taking New York, she says; this city doesn’t answer to Yamato.

The Rejuvenator. When someone gets hold of the Rejuvenator, she warns her companions at once.

“They have the Rejuvenator!”
