The Sewers
下水道
The sewers are the unseen web beneath New York: the old subway tunnels, and the tunnels deeper underground. Some make their home here; others make it their hiding place.
Above all, this is the turf of Mo & Krill. The Hidden King has taken up their grievance: their work sustains so many, he says, and yet they are relegated to the sewers like vermin; once the ritual is complete, he promises, this injustice will end:
“Mo and Krill, your work sustains so many. And yet you are relegated to the sewers like vermin. This injustice will end once you complete the ritual.”
“莫和克瑞尔,你们的工作养活了许多人。然而,你们却像害虫一样被贬谪到下水道。一旦你们完成仪式,这种不公将会结束”
The Archmother knows their plight just as well, and makes an offer of her own: the world counted the two of them out, she says, and yet they endured; on the day they summon her, they will be rewarded in kind:
“The world counted you both out, but not only did you endure… you thrived. So it will be today; and when you summon the Archmother you will be rewarded in kind.”
“世人都瞧不起你们,但你们不仅坚持下来…还非常茁壮。今天也是如此;等你们召唤源祖,你们也会得到相应的回报”
Mo & Krill do not count it a choice they made freely. To Vindicta they put it plainly:
“Vindicta, no one chooses to live in the sewers if there was a better option available.”
“薇妲,如果有更好的选择,没人会愿意住在下水道里。”TL
This was once Pocket’s hiding place too. Celeste, who knows all about him, mocked him when she saw him coming out of the sewer:
“Finally coming out of the sewer, I see?”
“总算从下水道里出来了,是吧?”TL
To Seven, the old subway tunnels are only a temporary refuge from federal agents. He moved onto Mo & Krill’s turf without asking permission, and they plainly take him for an intruder: the thing prowling their tunnels, they call him. The Tunnel Rats yield not an inch of their ground, and the Rat King is blunter still:
“Get outta my sewers!”
“滚出我的下水道!”TL
Baba has no kinder face for the people who live down here:
“Scurry back to your tunnels, gentlemen.”
“先生们,快滚回你们的地道去吧。”TL
Seven once urged Violet to consider how desperate the government had been to smother him. She was unmoved: the government didn’t care what she painted, she said, and if something mattered to her that much, she would rather say it out loud than hide in the sewer the way he did:
“Well if it's that important to me I'm going to want to say it, not hide in the sewer.”
“嗯,如果那对我真那么重要,我会想大声说出来,而不是躲在下水道里。”TL
