Carlos Arroyo
Carlos Arroyo is the head of the Arroyos, a politician from Spanish Harlem known for his devotion to community causes. He is now running for mayor of New York, in what has become one of the most closely watched contests in the city.
His bond with Ivy began eighteen years ago, when the Arroyos took in the gargoyle. She would later speak of him like this:
“I would be still wondering the streets if it weren't for the Arroyos. They took me in. Made me part of their family. If there's one person in New York I would trust to do the right thing it's Carlos.”
“要不是阿若悠一家,我现在还在街头流浪。他们收留了我,让我成了他们家的一员。要说纽约有谁我信得过会做正确的事,那就是卡洛斯。”TL
Ever since, Carlos has been Ivy’s guide through life. When something comes up she often asks herself what he would do, and she quotes him often, as here:
“Like Carlos says: you can make opportunities, but you can't make people take them...”
“正如卡洛斯所说:你可以创造机会,但你无法强迫别人抓住机会……”
She carries even his small pieces of everyday philosophy to other people:
“Carlos always says it takes more muscles to frown than to smile”
“卡洛斯总是说皱眉比微笑需要更多的肌肉”
Hearing it, Vindicta quipped that he sounds like a preschool teacher.
To raise money for his campaign, Ivy asked Lady Geist for help. Lady Geist admitted she has rarely found politicians worth the investment, yet she still promised to write a check if they survived.
“If we survive I'll write you a check.”
“如果我们能活下来,我给你开张支票。”TL
Infernus has declared his support too: even as he struck Ivy down, he told her Carlos still has his vote for mayor. Ivy, for her part, champions him openly:
“I believe in Carlos.”
“我相信卡洛斯”
Tall trees catch the most wind. Billy sneered that Ivy was his campaign’s “talking billboard,” and told her flatly that she was nothing but Carlos’s pawn:
“Ivy, you're just Carlos Arroyo's pawn.”
“青藤,你只是卡洛斯·阿若悠的棋子”
McGinnis had no time for his criticisms: if Carlos paid her mortgage, she said, she might care what he had to say. The Rat King went further still, needling Ivy with a vicious joke about his children.
In Ivy’s eyes, he is the elder who would not want to see her go astray. Solomon once used that very hope of his to try to dissuade her:
“Carlos wouldn't want to see you do this, Ivy”
“卡洛斯不会想看到你这样做的,青藤。”TL
