The Arctic

The Arctic is the snowbound wilderness of the far north, and the place where Kelvin’s expedition was lost to the last man. Kelvin led his team deep into it, and never came back as an ordinary man. He puts it briefly and calmly himself:

“I died in the arctic.”

“我倒在北极”

The cold of those ice fields is branded deep into him. He takes no small pride in how well he bears it:

“Only I can bear the arctic chill safely.”

“只有我能安然承受北极的寒意。”TL

To others, the Arctic is a warning. One told him flatly that his life ended there:

“Your life ended in the Arctic, Kelvin.”

“你的生命终结于北极，开尔文”

Another sighed that it was there his whole expedition died:

“You know, Kelvin, maybe if you stopped underestimating people, your whole expedition wouldn’t have died in the arctic.”

“开尔文，你知道吗，如果你不再低估别人，也许你的整个探险队就不会倒在北极了”

The OSIC once went out of its way to remind citizens that North Pole expeditions are illegal without a permit. And in the mouths of Kelvin’s opponents, the ice fields have become a taunt tossed off in passing: he should have stayed in the Arctic and never come out.

“You should have stayed in the arctic.”

“你就该待在北极圈里别出来。”TL
