The Deep

The Deep is a hidden realm sunk beneath the Atlantic. The Bermuda Triangle of legend was never a myth: it is a shadowline nexus buried deep beneath the sea, and the things that escaped this astral gate were for the most part benign, Nessie among them. But now something dark and predatory hunts the seas. All manner of ocean denizens dwell here, and it is the home of Viscous. The humans of the surface know little of it; even Apollo admits it has come up in no course he has ever taken.

Now this kingdom beneath the waves is suffering a catastrophe. Its denizens are being slaughtered by the Adversary, and they are scared to death. One of them, a psychic sea anemone, resolved to stand by no longer: it summoned an ectoplasmic body of goo and came ashore, trying to find help in the world above.

That envoy is Viscous. This is how he announces himself.

“I represent the concerns of The Deep.”

“我代表深海的诉求。”TL

The longer he is away, the more he misses home, and the more he worries about how things stand there.

“I never should have left The Deep.”

“我真不该离开深海。”TL

Yet the people on land are not grateful. Some treat him as a visitor who should never have come ashore, and tell him bluntly to go back.

“Return to The Deep, Viscous.”

“滚回深海秘境，魔液”

Others notice how far he has come. When Baba met him, she told him he was a long way from the Deep.

“You're a long way from The Deep, hon.”

“你离深渊可远了，亲爱的。”TL

The Deep holds more than victims. Fathom comes from here too, a notorious monster whose name turns sailors pale, though even he has been fading in the Adversary’s shadow. He was once told to his face that he is nothing but a forgotten god with no one to worship him.

“Fathom, your dreams of conquest are over. The Adversary's grasp of The Deep will not be broken by the likes of you... a forgotten god with no one to worship him.”

“海魇，你的征服梦想破灭了。像你这样的人，无法撼动恶魔对深海秘境的掌控……一个无人膜拜、被人遗忘的神”

Viscous says the Deep’s problems are more serious than the troubles of the Djinn, Mirage’s people. Haze holds that if there is a problem in the Deep, it is only a matter of time before it is a problem on land. Viscous has warned Dynamo that sooner or later the Adversary will tire of the Deep and come for those on land himself. Kelvin once said his next expedition would be either Appalachia or the Deep, and admitted he has never explored it, though he would like to one day.

More than once, Viscous has said that the Deep will be silent no longer.

“The Deep will be silent no longer…”

“深海将不再沉默…”

Deadman Danny, for his part, has spoken for Fairfax Industries: the company cares about the issues of the Deep, he says, but they will have to wait for a later time.

“Fairfax Industries cares about the issues of The Deep, but they have to wait for a later time.”
