Assassin
Nameless Hunter of the Endless Night
“I never had much use for a name. Names are for people who want to be remembered. Me? My existence is like gravity or time… a concept that you fear but cannot escape. I simply Am.”
Abilities
Rend
Swipe at enemies in a cone ahead of you, dealing spirit damage. If the enemy is in close range, deal bonus melee damage.
Lore
An ancient vampire roaming across America, the nameless monstrosity known as The Drifter has been preying on the living for generations.
Unlike most vampires, Drifter doesn’t value finery or titles and has naked contempt for vampiric laws and tradition. This refusal to toe the line has made him a marked man all over the North American Baronies; but while Viscounts and Elders cry for his execution, Drifter continues to do what he pleases...
What They Seek
Return to Manhattan and kill as he pleases
It is not the pay he is after: he would do this for free, and the Patron’s gift is, to his mind, just a bonus. What he truly looks forward to is seeing how Manhattan has changed in a generation, and sneering to their faces at the soft Elders of New Amsterdam, who cling to archaic titles as though they grant them real power. As for how he kills, he takes orders from no one and goes by what he feels in the moment — like jazz, it only has its savor when there is no score.
He looks down on the Patrons, and treats the ritual as a spectacle laid on for him to sit back and watch.
“I don't need the Patrons. The Patrons need me.”
“我不需要守护神,是守护神需要我。”TL
Both Patrons are courting Drifter
The massacre is his to revel in, a gift; the only price is that he summon the one who gives it.

The Archmother

Biography
He says he never had much use for a name. Names are for people who want to be remembered, and his existence is like gravity or time — a concept you fear but cannot escape. Still, others have to call him something, and so he came by the name Drifter.
This ancient vampire has roamed the American night for more years than anyone can count, preying on the living for generations. He cares nothing for finery, recognizes no titles, and makes no secret of his contempt for vampiric law and tradition. He is a marked man in every corner of the North American Baronies; Viscounts and Elders cry for his execution, and still he does as he pleases. He likes to work up close, because up close you get to hear every beautiful sound. When the moment comes, he murmurs: light’s out.
“The best part of working close is you get to hear every beautiful sound.”
“近距离工作的最大好处就是你能听到每一个美妙的声音”
“Light's out…”
“灯灭了…”
Origins
The Doorman once told him to his face that here he is no predator, merely vermin scuttling down the hall, and that before long he will find himself feeling something that has eluded him for centuries: fear.
“Your heart beats faster as you find yourself in new territory. Slowly but surely realizing that here you are no predator, merely vermin scuttling down the hall. It won't be long before you find yourself feeling something that's eluded you for centuries. Fear.”
“当你置身于陌生的领域时,你的心跳加速。你慢慢地、但又坚定地意识到,你并非捕食者,而只是走廊里匆匆而过的害虫。不久之后,你就会感受到一种几个世纪以来你都未曾体验过的感觉:恐惧”
Yet he once wore another face. To Seven he owned that he used to play the game, wear the lace, say the pretty words — and that he now holds the pursuit of power to be a trap. Seven shot back that it was spoken like a man who never attained it.
“I used to play the game, wear the lace, say the pretty words. Let me tell you, friend... the pursuit of power is a trap.”
“我曾经也玩过这套把戏,穿着华丽的服饰,说着动听的话语。告诉你吧,朋友……追逐权力就是一个陷阱”
“Spoken like a man who never attained it.”
“这话听着像是从没得到过权力的人说的。”TL
That disdain runs all the way down to the foundations of the Vampire Nation. To Mina he put it bluntly: the Vampire Nation is a Ponzi scheme, and the sooner she realizes it the better.
“The Vampire Nation is a Ponzi scheme, Mina, the sooner you realize that the better…”
“血族国度是个庞氏骗局,米娜,你越早意识到这一点越好…”
Mina, though, talked terms with him. When she is Viscount, she said, she will lift the Venery on him — not out of kindness, but because it is practical: he is just going to ignore it anyway, and it would make her look weak.
“It's not kind, it's practical. You're just gonna ignore it anyway, and it would make me look weak.”
“这不是好心,是务实。反正你也会无视它,而且那会让我显得软弱。”TL
He has also asked her why she isn’t being a good little vampire and following the Viscount’s orders. Mina answered that anyone old enough to call the Viscount by his first name is probably strong enough to tear her in half. He said only that he had a funny story about that, and would tell her later.
Drifter and Mina, exchange 2

Ya know who I am, right?

Everyone in the Barony of New York knows who you are.

Then why aren’t you being a good little vampire and following Simon's orders?

Because if you're old enough to call The Viscount by his first name you're probably strong enough to tear me in half.

I got a funny story about that… I'll tell you later.
Old Friends and Foes
Grey Talon: A Long-Awaited Reckoning
He calls Grey Talon Wesley. When Grey Talon asked whether he had gone after his grandkids, he answered that if he had meant to murder them, he would have tied Wesley down and made him watch. Grey Talon said he was going to kill him; his reply was that it wouldn’t be today — Wesley needs him.
Drifter and Grey Talon, exchange 1

Did you do it.

Wesley, if I was gonna murder your grandkids we both know I woulda tied you down and made you watch.

I'm going to kill you.

Oh you're certainly gonna try. But it ain't gonna be today. You need me.
He has needled Grey Talon, too: don’t tell me you’re still raw about Oklahoma. And when he struck Grey Talon down, he said he had waited a long time to do it.
“The silent treatment? Really? Don't tell me you're still raw about Oklahoma”
“冷战?真的吗?别告诉我你还在为俄克拉荷马州的事耿耿于怀”
“I waited a long time to kill you, Wesley.”
“我等了很久才击倒你,卫斯理”
Vindicta and Calico: Striking for Wesley
When Vindicta brought him down, she said: that was for you, Wesley.
“That was for you, Wesley.”
“这一枪是为了你,卫斯理”
Calico asked whether he was here to torment the Jeffries family again, and pointed out that it has been three generations. Everyone needs a hobby, he said — and three generations is a testament to how satisfying it is.
“It's been 3 generations.”
“已经折磨三代人了。”TL
“Which I'd say is a testament to how satisfying it is.”
“我认为这足以证明它有多么令人满意”
Shiv: Facing a Broken Mirror
Shiv is an old friend of his. He laments it: you used to be a man.
“What the hell happened to you Shiv… you used to be a man.”
“希弗……你到底怎么了?你以前可是条汉子啊”
Lady Geist: Oathkeeper Imprisoned
Oathkeeper, bound to Lady Geist’s arm, is someone he knows. He was talking to her arm, he said. Oathkeeper is calling to him, he says. And when he struck Geist down, he said he couldn’t have her putting someone so fun under lock and key.
“I was talking to your arm.”
“我在跟你的手臂说话”
“Oathkeeper is calling to me, Geist…”
“守誓者在呼唤我,盖斯特…”
“I can't have you putting someone as fun as Oathkeeper under lock and key, Geist.”
“我不能让你把像守誓者这样有趣的人关起来,盖斯特”
Venator: The Sword of the Vatican
Venator has announced that he will drive a stake in his heart. His answer: you aren’t the first Venator to make that claim, and you sure as hell won’t be the last.
“After the ritual's complete I'm going to drive a stake in your heart.”
“仪式完成之后,我就把木桩钉进你的心脏。”TL
“You ain't the first Venator to make that claim, and you sure as hell ain't gonna be the last.”
“你不是第一个这样说的,诛邪者,而且你肯定也不会是最后一个”
Silver: A Cut-Rate Bounty Hunter
He calls Silver “my favorite cut rate bounty hunter.” The Doorman once laid her wounds bare to her face, speaking of her fantasy that one day killing Shiv and the Drifter will make up for all the lives that were lost because she just wasn’t good enough to stop them.
“Silver Silver Silver… how's my favorite cut rate bounty hunter.”
“西尔芙西尔芙西尔芙……我最喜欢的低价赏金猎人怎么样了”
“Oh Lilah, where do I begin with someone as pathetic as you? The walls of your own making that ended friendships? The vices that you've become a slave to? Or perhaps this fantasy that one day killing Shiv and the Drifter will make up for all the lives that were lost because you just weren't good enough to stop them. I truly am spoiled for choice...”
“哦,莉拉,像你这样可悲的人,我该从哪说起呢?是你亲手筑起、毁掉了友情的高墙?还是你沦为奴隶的那些恶习?或者是你那个幻想:有朝一日杀了希弗和孤猎,就能弥补那些因为你不够强、没能阻止他们而失去的性命。我真是挑都挑不过来…”TL
Mina and the Doorman
Mina finds his coat awful; he says it’s sentimental. So she offered to get him something tailored after the ritual, because she wants to say she made a bespoke jacket for a legend. His answer: it’s not the same if he doesn’t work for it.
“It's sentimental.”
“这是一种纪念”
“Because I want to say I made a bespoke jacket for a legend.”
“因为我想说,我为一位传奇亲手做过一件定制外套。”TL
The Doorman, for his part, laid down the rules: if they fail, Drifter will not set one foot in the Baroness Hotel, nor lay a finger on its guests, lest his immortal life meet an ignoble end.
“I will do my job because I value excellence. But if we fail you will not set one foot in The Baroness nor will you lay a finger on its guests lest your immortal life meet an ignoble end. Am I clear”
“我会尽职尽责,因为我追求卓越。但如果我们失败了,您休想踏入巴隆妮斯一步,也休想碰那里的客人一根手指头,否则你的永生将以耻辱的方式终结。明白了吗?”
Victor: Just Be
With Victor, who is bent on knowing where he came from, he counsels the opposite: the past is a trap, the future is a fantasy; just be, Victor, and you’ll be happier.
“No you don't. You need to know where you are. The past is a trap, the future is a fantasy. Just be, Victor, you'll be happier.”
“不,你不需要。你需要知道自己身处何方。过去是陷阱,未来是幻想。做你自己,维克多,你会更快乐”
Holliday: Don’t Go Looking for Him
Holliday is hunting the Troubadour, and he urges her to let it go: if she does find the man, and he learns that he has his hooks in her, she will become his hobby.
“Macomb matters a lot to you, but to him it was just a fun time that will get lost in the ocean of memory. But if you find him… if he knows he got his hooks in you? You're going to be his hobby.”
“马科姆对你来说意义非凡,但对他而言,那只是一段美好的回忆,终将湮没在记忆的海洋中。但如果你找到他… 如果他知道你已经对他着迷——你就会成为他的消遣”
Dynamo and Celeste: The Price of Prey
He relishes helpless prey. To Dynamo he said there are few things he likes more than a helpless victim, and reminded him that if he fails today, it is his wife Marla who will die for him.
“Don't worry about me not capitalizing professor… there's few things I like more than helpless victim.”
“别担心我没有把教授的名字首字母大写… 我最喜欢无助的受害者了”
“No professor, fail today and she'll die for you.”
“没有教授,你今天要是失败了,她会为你而死”
With Celeste, though, he is willing to give ground. When Celeste offered simply to give him blood, he said that would be a lot less fun for him; so she pointed out that if he lets her live, he can come back whenever he wants the novelty — and get the added bonus of not having half his face burned off. You make a compelling argument, he told her.
“It's a lot less fun for me.”
“对我来说可就没那么有趣了”
“I get that. But here's the thing: we're hard to come by. If you kill me, you don't know if you'll ever see a unicorn again. If you let me live - you can come back whenever you want the novelty. Also you get the added bonus not having half your face burned off.”
“我懂。可问题是:我们这种可不好找。你杀了我,就不知道以后还能不能再见到独角兽。你留我一命,想尝鲜随时可以回来。而且你还能额外落个好处,不用被烧掉半张脸。”TL
Anecdotes
Oklahoma. In Oklahoma he is a figure of legend. Vyper says everyone there knows him: he is a bona fide boogeyman.
“That’s cause they never did time in OKC. Buddy, you're a legend there, like bonafide boogeyman. As far as I'm concerned this is like sitting next to Mozart on the piano bench while he plays cannon in D.”
“那是因为他们从来没有在俄克拉荷马州待过时间。兄弟,你是那里的传奇人物,就像真正的恶棍一样。就我而言,这就像坐在钢琴长凳上坐在莫扎特旁边,同时他在弹D大调卡农”
A Blade Put to Use. Haze makes no bones about it to him: they aren’t coming for him, they are using him.
“No we're using you. If we were coming for you you'd already be dead.”
“不,我们是在利用你。如果我们是来找你的,你早就失败了”
The Troubadour. Speaking of the Troubadour, he says the man has got nothing on him.
“The Troubadour ain't got nothin' on me.”
“游吟诗人跟我比,差远了。”TL
Those Who Stood in His Way. Mo & Krill say they didn’t stop the Drifter; they only slowed him down.
“We didn't stop The Drifter… we only slowed him down.”
“我们没能阻止“孤猎”,我们只是减缓了他的速度”
