Maximilian Fairfax

Maximilian Fairfax is the CEO of Fairfax Industries. To McGinnis, he is “Papa Fairfax.”

“Papa Fairfax is giving me a raise after this...”

McGinnis did not force her own way into the company back then; she was handpicked by the man himself. Billy once threw that in her face, telling her not to act like she was blue collar.

“Don't act like you're blue collar, McGinnis. You were handpicked by Fairfax himself.”

When the Cadenza Incident broke, everyone around him was far more rattled than he was; he was surprisingly calm. As McGinnis sees it, he never expected Cadenza to last forever, and only wanted to make the most of an opportunity before legislation caught up. Haze remarked that for someone who cares about legacy as much as he does, that was probably worth more than money, and McGinnis agreed.

“Honestly, the rest of us were more rattled than he was. I was just a kid freaking out cause I thought I was going to lose my job, but Fairfax was surprisingly calm. I don't think he expected Cadenza to last forever, he just wanted to make the most out of an opportunity before legislation caught up. Plus the guy gets to say he created one the United States.”

McGinnis’s verdict on him is a tangled one. She likes him, she says: he has enough of an ego to think he can play god, but not so big an ego as to think he is god. Yet asked whether he is a good person, she would only say that she doesn’t think anyone is.

“I like him. He's got enough of an ego to think he can play god but not too big of an ego to think he is god.”

He has a generous side as well: he once donated a small fortune to New York’s orphanages, and when asked about it said only that no one should be without family on the holidays.

The heaviest page belongs to his family. His son Pocket says that the “gift” his father gave him for his eighteenth birthday was a bullet to the chest — that was the Shooting.

Pocket would rather the power in Pocket's Case be in his own hands than in his father’s; he even told Venator that if he wants to hunt monsters, he should hunt Pocket’s father.

Dynamo is an old friend of his, and calls him “a complicated man.” As for their old friendship, he admits that “friends” might be pushing it these days, though he feels Fairfax still has warm nostalgia for him; Pocket, for his part, said as he struck Dynamo down that he should have known he would take his father’s side.

“He's a complicated man. There's a difference.”

In the eyes of a loyal subordinate, he is another man entirely. Deadman Danny sees him as a gentleman, a genius and the hero of our century — and more than that, as the one “father figure” in his life — and proclaims him a visionary.
