The sovereignty fight over the fiftieth state
The Cadenza Incident was one of history’s breathtaking episodes, and it turned on the island of Cadenza. The island would go on to become the fiftieth state of the United States, and the question of who held sovereignty over it once went all the way to the Supreme Court.
Haze once asked someone who had lived through it what it had been like back then.
“Were you working for FI when the whole Cadenza situation was going down?”

McGinnis was just a kid at the time, working at Fairfax Industries and freaking out because she thought she was going to lose her job. As she remembers it, the whole company was rattled — everyone except the boss, who was surprisingly calm.
“Honestly, the rest of us were more rattled than he was. I was just a kid freaking out cause I thought I was going to lose my job, but Fairfax was surprisingly calm. I don't think he expected Cadenza to last forever, he just wanted to make the most out of an opportunity before legislation caught up. Plus the guy gets to say he created one the United States.”

In her view, Maximilian Fairfax never expected it to last forever; he only wanted to make the most of an opportunity before legislation caught up. The aftershocks went on long after, and the papers were still asking who held sovereignty over the island.
“The Supreme Court is poised to rule on the Fairfax, Fair Tax Bill next session. Will our 50th state remain in the Union? Or will Fairfax Industries successfully regain it's soverignty over the island of Cadenza…only time will tell.”
