Mystic
Doorkeeper of The Baroness
“Welcome to The Baroness.”
Abilities
Call Bell
Throw out a call bell that deals spirit damage on impact. After a short delay it explodes, dealing additional spirit damage and causing affected enemies to suffer reduced weapon accuracy and movement slow. Can be shot to detonate early.
Lore
He's proper, he's polite, but the humble Doorman of The Baroness Hotel is more than meets the eye.
While he had only planned to experience life on this plane for a few weeks, The Doorman quickly discovered that the New York service industry was a great way to see the strange demands that please humans.
What They Seek
Reunite with old friends; savor human life a while longer
In his telling the ritual is a routine piece of business: with each step forward he announces another part of the ritual complete, in the tone of a man checking a ledger; of summoning old friends he says only, mildly, that it was “so nice.” Yet every time he sets out, what he says is “This is the beginning of the end.”
He meets the summons with a host’s unhurried ease, treats the Patrons’ urging like guests who can be kept waiting, and would rather stay out of their quarrel altogether.
“The Patrons have waited centuries to be summoned, they can wait a little longer. Stay. Enjoy the sauna and egyptian cotton sheets. Let the troubles of the world melt away.”
“守护神们等待召唤已有几个世纪,他们可以再等一会儿。留下来。享受桑拿和埃及棉床单。让世间的烦恼烟消云散”
Both Patrons are courting The Doorman
Looks forward to the reunion: he shed his trappings to walk amongst humanity, and now reclaims his rightful place.

Biography
He says “Welcome” as though offering a gift, and “Please, stay” as though extending an invitation. In the lobby of the Baroness Hotel, his is the first face a guest sees, and the last; his attentiveness is beyond reproach, and precisely because it is beyond reproach, it makes the skin crawl.
Some take him for nothing more than a capable doorman. Others hear something else in his words: a being who treats reality as a suggestion and time as a corridor, who has stooped to fetch and carry among mortals, and enjoys every minute of it.
Origins
No one can say where he came from. When Paige asked how long he had worked at the hotel, he answered: since its inception. Then he added that he had tormented man for so long that serving them still retains its novel charm.
“Well, I tormented man for so long that serving them still retains its novel charm.”
“我折磨人类太久了,以至于服侍他们仍然让我感到新鲜有趣”
Another time, Paige pressed him for his name. He would give her only “The Doorman,” admitting that it is not a name, but a reminder that keeps him grounded: he is in New York to serve, not to rule. She tried calling him “Brian”; he answered with a single word: “No.”
Paige and The Doorman, exchange 3

So what's your name?

I am The Doorman.

I know that's your job, but what's your name?

The doorman.

That's not your name.

It's not, but for my purposes in New York it helps me stay grounded that I am here to serve and not to rule.

What if I called you Brian?

No.
The years seem to have no hold on him. When Calico said he looked like he hadn’t aged a day, he answered, “I haven’t”; when she asked him to tell her his secret, he said that would spoil the fun.
“That would spoil the fun.”
“那样就没意思了”
Beneath the meek exterior lies another face entirely. He had forgotten, he says, how wonderful it can feel to be feared, and only now, tasting it again, does he remember. He has said too that he hasn’t slaughtered man like this for years—what a treat. These are not words an ordinary doorman could say.
“I forgot how wonderful it can feel to be feared.”
“我忘了被人畏惧的感觉有多棒了”
“I haven't slaughtered man like this for years, what a treat.”
“我已经好几年没这样击败别人了,真是爽极了”
Nor does he make a secret of the weight of what he is. To those with real power, he says, the rules of reality are mere suggestions. When someone fires on him, he asks in return: what can bullets do to a god? When someone has him cornered, what he brings up is “a fledgling god,” as though it were someone else’s story.
“To those with real power the rules of reality are mere suggestions.”
“对那些真正掌握权力的人来说,现实的规则不过是些建议而已”
“What can bullets do to a god?”
“子弹能对神做什么?”
The hotel he keeps is a strange place in its own right. When Grey Talon asked whether it was still the most haunted hotel in America, he answered that it was just the tri-state area, he was afraid: that ghastly business in Macomb had pulled a lot of Midwest specters. Speaking of how the hotel was faring, he said things had been running smoothly since the Baxter Society’s intervention, then added: there are some sins that not even bottomless mimosas can make up for.
“It is. There are some sins that not even bottomless mimosas can make up for.”
“的确如此。有些罪过,即使是无限畅饮的含羞草鸡尾酒也无法弥补”
Old Friends and Foes
Calico: A Promise Fit for a Queen
Calico is an old acquaintance; when they met again, he told her, “Lovely to see you again.” She asked him, should something happen to her, to take care of her cat, Ava. He agreed: Ava would be treated like a queen at The Baroness.
“In the unlikely event of it being necessary, she will be treated like a queen at The Baroness.”
“如果真有必要,她会在巴隆尼被奉为女王般对待。”
Yet when the two of them truly crossed blades, he said Ava will belong to The Baroness soon enough.
“Ava will belong to The Baroness soon enough.”
“艾娃很快就会属于巴隆妮斯”
Infernus: A Colleague’s Apology
He invited Infernus, should he ever tire of Jezebel’s, to come and work in his lounge. When it truly came to blows, he still apologized: it wasn’t personal.
“Infernus, if you ever tire of Jezebel's please let me know. I think you would enjoy working in our lounge.”
“炽焱,如果你哪天厌倦了杰泽贝尔,请告诉我。你应该会喜欢在我们的休息室工作的”
“It wasn't personal, Infernus, I hope you understand that.”
“这不是针对你个人的,炽焱,希望你能明白”
Drifter: An Ignoble End
Drifter once threatened to tear through his hotel. The Doorman answered calmly: “No sir, you will not.” He would do his job, he said, because he values excellence; but he warned that if they failed, Drifter would not set one foot in the hotel nor lay a finger on its guests, lest his immortal life meet an ignoble end. At the last he added only that he was just the doorman.
Drifter and The Doorman, exchange 2

Do your job or I'm going to tear through your little hotel.

No sir, you will not.

Excuse me?

I will do my job because I value excellence. But if we fail you will not set one foot in The Baroness nor will you lay a finger on its guests lest your immortal life meet an ignoble end. Am I clear

Who the hell are you?

I'm just the doorman.
Grey Talon and Graves: Hot Tea on an Open Wound
He sees straight through people. Grey Talon he addresses by his real name, Wesley, and tells him that, forever traveling for work, he missed the lives of his son and grandchildren, and that it was he who robbed them of a father.
“Wesley, you dedicated your life to protecting others but in the end you couldn't protect your son. Or his wife. Or their children. How many moments of their lives did you miss because you were too busy. Because you were traveling for work. Because your calling was important and your family would be there when you return. Yes... their lives were stolen; but it was you who robbed them of a father. Well done.”
“卫斯理,你毕生致力于保护他人,却最终没能保护你的儿子,也没能保护他的妻子,也没能保护他们的孩子。你因为太忙而错过了他们生命中的多少美好瞬间。因为你总是出差,因为你的使命很重要,而且当你回来时,你的家人都在等着你。没错……他们的生命被夺走了;但你却夺走了他们的父亲。干得好”
To Graves he said that she is so starving for a parental figure that she ran straight into the palm of a lich’s hand; her parents won’t notice, but he sees her. Stay, and let him be her teacher. He admitted, too, that this is most certainly out of character for him; it is only that she has so much potential.
“Miss Graves, you are so starving for a parental figure that you ran straight into the literal palm of a lich's hand. You know it's wrong. You know you can't control her. You know that you're going to die if you don't get help, and you're praying that your parents will notice before it's too late. They won't. But I see you. Stay at The Baroness, and let me be your teacher.”
“格瑞墓小姐,你太渴望父母般的关爱,以至于一头扎进了英灵的掌心。你心里清楚这不对,清楚自己控制不了她,也清楚如果再不求助就会死,而你还在祈祷父母会在为时已晚前察觉。他们不会的。但我看得到你。留在巴隆妮斯酒店吧,让我来做你的老师。”TL
“Miss Graves, this is not my place and it's most certainly out of character for me, but you have so much potential.”
“格雷墓小姐,这不该由我来说,也确实不像我的风格,但您真的很有潜力”
He says such things with tender care, but their aim is to keep people at the hotel. Afterward Graves felt only that the man is disquieting.
Bebop and Pocket: Kindness and the Sting
Before the ritual he offered to treat Bebop’s Miss Shelly to a spa day at the hotel, saying he wished he could offer more for her. But once the fighting began, he used Miss Shelly’s life to stab at Bebop: when Miss Shelly dies, it will be because of your failure.
“Bebop, if we survive the ritual please let me treat Miss Shelly to a spa day at The Baroness.”
“比波普,如果我们在仪式中幸存下来,请让我请雪莉小姐去巴隆妮斯享受一天水疗”
“Know this Bebop: when Miss Shelly dies it will be because of your failure.”
“记住,比波普:雪莉小姐没治好是因为你失败了”
For Pocket he had only words meant to cut to the heart: why couldn’t you have just died like your family wanted?
“Why couldn't you have just died like your family wanted? It would have saved us a lot of trouble.”
“你为什么不能像你家人希望的那样倒下呢?那样可以省去我们很多麻烦”
Mo & Krill: Whispers in Both Ears
On the hotel’s behalf he once asked Mo & Krill, Maurice and Krill alike, whether they would be interested in being kept on retainer, to cater to some guests with exotic requests. Yet he has also whispered in each one’s ear: to Maurice, that Krill is dead weight, better cast off, even struck down; to Krill, why do you lower yourself to Maurice’s standards?
“Would you two be interested in being kept on retainer? Some of our guests at the Baroness can have exotic requests that you both are more suited to catering to”
“你们两位是否有兴趣成为我们的常驻嘉宾?巴隆妮斯酒店的一些客人可能会有比较特殊的要求,而你们两位更适合满足这些要求”
“Maurice... Krill is dead weight. An albatross whose petty schemes have driven you to hide in the muck like a common criminal. But you're not common. You're exceptional. Free yourself of him, and see this for yourself.”
“莫里斯……克里尔就是个累赘。一只信天翁,他那些小算盘让你像个普通罪犯一样躲在污泥里。可你不普通,你是非凡的。摆脱他吧,亲自去看看你能做到什么。”TL
“Krill... your brilliance shines in the dark, but it would be radiant in the sun. Why do you lower yourself to Maurice's standards? Your blind loyalty to him has cost you opportunity after opportunity. Cast him aside. Accept who you are.”
“克里尔……你的才华在黑暗中闪耀,但在阳光下会更加耀眼。你何必迁就莫里斯的标准?你对他的盲目忠诚已让你错失一次又一次的机会。把他抛开,接受真正的自己吧。”TL
Lady Geist: Courteous Mockery
Lady Geist once fell to him. He remarked coolly then that at the end of the day, a queen bee is still merely an insect, and that Oathkeeper’s power is nothing compared to his own.
“At the end of the day, a queen bee is still merely an insect.”
“归根结底,蜂后也只不过是一种昆虫而已”
Holliday and Mirage: A Free Room, a Promise of Care
Holliday couldn’t afford a room at The Baroness, so he insisted the stay would be complimentary. He also told her that, in his experience, most people who have endured the kind of trauma she faced in Macomb crumble.
“In my experience most people who've endured the kind of trauma you faced in Macomb crumble”
“以我的经验来看,大多数经历过您在马科姆遭遇的那种创伤的人都会崩溃”
Mirage, for his part, he treats as a guest of the hotel. He promised that if Mirage lost his life in service, he would take appropriate care of Ambassador Nashala and transport her wherever she needs to go.
“Know that if you lose your life in service today, I will take appropriate care of Ambassador Nashala and transport her wherever she needs to go.”
“请知悉,如果您今天因公殉职,我将妥善照顾那沙拉大使,并将她送往她需要去的任何地方”
Haze and Seven: Eyes From Beyond the Hotel
Haze has worked alongside him under the OSIC’s banner; he told her he had worked with curators and mediums, but never a sandman. Yet after striking him down, she said it looked like the OSIC is going to have to intervene at The Baroness.
“You know, I've worked with curators and mediums, but never a sandman.”
“你知道嘛,我曾与策展人和灵媒合作过,但从未与睡魔合作过”
“Looks like the OSIC is going to have to intervene at The Baroness.”
“看来OSIC必须对巴隆妮斯进行干预”
Seven, for his part, would rather not provoke him. He calls him an errant force of nature on sabbatical, and won’t risk a temper tantrum that could cost him the ritual.
“I don't fear you. It's just not worth risking the temper tantrum of an errant force of nature costing me the ritual.”
“我不怕你。只是不值得冒险,让一股失控的自然之力发脾气,害我搞砸仪式。”TL
Anecdotes
Mimosas. Bottomless mimosas are the hotel’s signature. He explained to Mo & Krill that it was either remove Silver or remove the bottomless mimosas. Vyper too has been shown the door, and when she later struck him down, she did not forget to settle that old score.
“I don't take pleasure in it, but it was either remove her or remove the bottomless mimosas.”
“我并不乐意这样做,但要么把她赶走,要么取消无限畅饮的含羞草鸡尾酒”
“That's for kicking me out of The Baroness.”
“谁叫你把我赶出了巴隆妮斯”
Tips. He measures people by their tips, and needles them with tips too. He told Apollo that among all manner of dignitaries and celebrities, Apollo’s family stands a cut above the rest in terms of decorum; a pity they were terrible tippers.
“You were terrible tippers. Polite though, and that counts for something.”
“你们给的小费太少了。不过你们很有礼貌,这多少也算是一种优点”
Neutrality. He once said that The Baroness must be above politics. But once he takes a hand, others turn it back on him: Baba says he is supposed to be impartial.
“You're supposed to be impartial Doorman”
“你应该保持中立的,门侍。”TL
Barbs. He always delivers an insult as though it were a greeting. To Apollo he brought up the schoolyard rhyme the children of Ixia sing about his mother being impaled on a tree; to Ivy he said she is a good person and he has no desire to torment her, then told her that in five years one of the Arroyos is going to die.
“Apollo, how does it feel to be a part of a family so hated that children in Ixia sing a schoolyard rhyme about your mother being impaled on a tree?”
“阿波罗,身为一个如此受人憎恨的家族的一员,伊克斯亚的孩子们在校园里唱着一首关于你母亲被钉在树上的童谣,你感觉如何?”
“Ivy, you're a good person and I have no desire to torment you here. Just know this: in five years one of the Arroyos is going to die and there is nothing you can do to stop it.”
“青藤,你是个好人,我不想在这里折磨你。但你要记住:五年后,阿若悠一家会有一个人倒下,而你对此无能为力”
