Miss Shelly is the attendant of Miss Shelly's Junkyard, an elderly widow. She forged Bebop with her own hands, yet never thought of him as a mere scrap golem laborer: he was the son she couldn’t have. By day the two of them worked among the heaps of iron; by night they listened to jazz together. She has always stressed the importance of etiquette.
She is generous-hearted, and holds that you shouldn’t judge someone based on what they do. Mina would have none of it, guessing that she was probably poor, and Bebop curtly told the vampire not to talk about his mother like that. Victor heard how fondly he speaks of his creator, and Bebop’s verdict on her came to a single line:
“Miss Shelly is a good woman.”
“雪莉小姐是个好人”
Now Miss Shelly lies ill in bed. Bebop runs himself ragged on her behalf, even fighting in the ring for money — trades Miss Shelly probably wouldn’t approve of. Both of the Patrons know her plight, and both use her life to win him over. The Archmother promises that if he summons her, Miss Shelly can be saved:
“Miss Shelly's life is in your hands, Bebop… summon The Archmother, and she can be saved.”
“雪莉小姐的性命掌握在你的手中,比波普… 召唤源祖,她就能得救”
The Hidden King, for his part, says that modern medicine can’t save Miss Shelly, but he can:
“Modern medicine can't save Miss Shelly, Bebop… but The Hidden King can. Summon him.”
“现代医学救不了雪莉小姐,比波普…但隐王可以。召唤他吧”
Whichever side names its terms, Bebop’s own answer never changes:
“I'll do whatever it takes to save Miss Shelly.”
“我会不惜一切代价救雪莉小姐”
His devotion shows again and again when he talks with others. He wants Paige to come and read to her, invites Drifter to the scrap yard for dinner after the ritual, and says he has been known to bake a biscuit or two for her. The Doorman offers to treat her to a spa day, while Ivy hopes she and the Arroyos will get along great. He asks Venator to say a prayer for her:
“Father, I'm not a religious man. Not a man at all, really. But… would you mind saying a prayer for Miss Shelly?”
“神父,我不是个信教的人。其实,我根本就不是个人。但是……您能为雪莉小姐祈祷吗?”
She loved reading about Kelvin’s adventures. When Kelvin disappeared, Bebop feared for a time that she would not live to read a new one:
“Miss Shelly loved reading about your adventures. When you disappeared it was sad thinking about her not being able to read a new one before she died. But now that you're back there's hope for one more story.”
“雪莉小姐很喜欢读你的冒险故事。你失踪的时候,想到她临终前没能读到新的冒险故事,真是令人难过。不过现在你回来了,又有了一个故事的希望”
Of standing alongside Lash, Bebop said bluntly that his love for her is more than his hate for Lash. He also worries that once this is over, the OSIC will take him away from her:
“When this is over the OSIC isn't going to take me away from Miss Shelly , right?”
“当这一切结束后,OSIC不会把我从雪莉小姐身边带走吧?”
Deadman Danny has spoken her name too. He grants that Miss Shelly is a talented creator — but in his heart, she is still no Maggie McGinnis.
“Miss Shelly is a talented creator, but she's no Maggie McGinnis”
“雪莉小姐是位有才华的创造者,可她比不上麦吉·麦金妮。”TL
Word on the Street
“My love for Miss Shelly is more than my hate for you. We're gonna win this thing… I just hope you die in the process.”
“我对雪莉小姐的爱远胜过我对你的恨。我们一定会赢… 我只希望你在这个过程中倒下”
