Origins

The daughter of the Ha family never wanted for anything; all she ever lacked was an ending to her liking. When her engagement came to nothing, her parents made it up to her with eternal youth and a trust fund, and she gladly accepted. Others seldom speak of it kindly. Paradox says she is not special just because her mommy and daddy paid someone to turn her into a vampire; the Doorman says her future was stolen by an assassin’s bullet and replaced with the promise of eternal youth — and they both know how well that has turned out for her — and calls her a child only just learning to play the game.

“Mina, you're not special because your mommy and daddy paid someone to turn you into a vampire.”

“Mina, Mina, Mina. Your future was stolen from you by an assassin's bullet and replaced with the promise of eternal youth. We both know how well that's turned out for you. You're a child just learning to play a game that others have spent hundreds of years perfecting... you are destined to fail.”

Infernus’s verdict on her: Mommy and Daddy can buy you a vampire, but they can’t buy you common sense.

She studied at Blackmore Academy, and Apollo is a fellow alumnus. He later asked her whether she had no love at all for her alma mater.

“No love for your alma mater, Mina?”

“米娜，你对母校没有丝毫感情吗？”

Some old scores she remembers better than anyone. She once told Infernus that this was for carding her on her sixteenth birthday; Infernus, for his part, brings up the name “Rosita Lopez” and calls it the worst fake ID he has ever seen.

“That's for carding me on my 16th birthday.”

Her true trade is fashion design. She has, she says, a fashion empire to build. The road has not been smooth: Seven would rather wear his prison jumpsuit than the abomination she trotted out at fashion week, and he supposes she is trying to summon the Patron to make people forget her last two collections.

“I have a fashion empire to build.”

“Mina. I would rather wear my prison jumpsuit than that abomination you trotted out at fashion week.”

Vampire society has not granted her much dignity either. She complains that at every salon she has to hang out with a bunch of old people, yet she knows that not showing up is seen as a snub — and that the only thing worse than a boring old vampire is an angry one.

“No no no, you don't skip a salon. Not showing up is seen as a snub, and the only thing worse than a boring old vampire, is an angry vampire.”

Pocket: The Fiancé She Thought Was Dead

Pocket is that assassinated fiancé, born Arin Fairfax. She had always believed him dead; as it turned out, he had only faked his death. When they met again, her first words were that he had ruined her life; Pocket’s answer was blunt: my father tried to kill me.

“You ruined my life.”

“你毁了我的人生。”TL

“I ruined your life? Mina, my father tried to kill me.”

“我毁了你的人生？米娜，我父亲想杀我。”TL

She has her less guarded moments, too. She reproached him that he should have told her he was alive — “Because I loved you.” He shot back that it was his last name she loved; she did not deny it, only said: I don’t know if that’s true.

She has said that she should have been a Fairfax.

“I should've been a Fairfax.”

Lady Geist: The Icon She Admires

Lady Geist is, in Mina’s words, an icon. The first thing she says is that she hopes she gets to work with Lady Geist; she is, she says, a big fan.

“I hope I get to work with Lady Geist, she's an icon.”

Lady Geist’s verdict is cool and clear-eyed. Mina, she says, has her ambition, but not her talent, she’s afraid.

“She has my ambition, but not my talent, I'm afraid.”

McGinnis: The “Little Pet Genius” She Envies

McGinnis is the object of her envy; she says she is going to kill Fairfax’s little pet genius. Yet she once let slip something telling: if she had cared enough about science, gone to engineering school and actually applied herself, she could have been McGinnis. It is only an “if.”

“I'm gonna kill Fairfax's little pet genius.”

Infernus: The Bartender Who Holds a Grudge

When Infernus sees her, what he says is “Been a while,” and then: I see we haven’t grown as a person.

“Been a while, Mina.”

Drifter: The Strong One She Must Smile For

Drifter is bold enough to call the Viscount by his first name. Asked why she wasn’t following Simon’s orders, she answered that someone that old is probably strong enough to tear her in half: if she does not carry out Simon’s orders, it is out of wariness. And so she promised to lift the Venery on him once she is Viscount.

“Because if you're old enough to call The Viscount by his first name you're probably strong enough to tear me in half.”

“因为能直呼子爵大人名字的人，年纪必定够老，多半也强得能把我撕成两半。”TL

Drifter’s view of her is far less polite: a kid like her is never gonna be Viscount.

“Kid like you is never gonna be Viscount.”

Grey Talon: An Ambition Seen Through

She mocks Grey Talon’s age, saying he looks as if he stumbled out of hospice.

“Aww, you stumbled out of hospice just to die here.”

Calico and Seven: Two Ways of Looking at Her

Calico looks on her career with some goodwill, saying she was always a fan of Mina’s work.

“A shame, I was a fan of her work.”

Seven’s words weigh far heavier. He warns her that vampires by their nature are stagnant, and she has chosen to work in a medium that is ever evolving; immortality and her career may not sit well together. Some things, she replies, are timeless.

“I'm talking about your career, not the ritual. Vampires by their nature are stagnant, and you have chosen to work in a medium that is ever evolving.”

Wraith and Vindicta: Sizing People Up

With Wraith she put on airs at first: she was rich, and Wraith had nothing she wanted. The moment Wraith mentioned fashion editors, models and connections of every kind, she changed her tune at once: I am so sorry. We should be friends.

“I mean, aside from connections with fashion editors, models, and anyone in the venn diagram of people with status who also have vices, sure. I got nothing.”

Billy and Venator: Those Who Won’t Be Her Friends

Billy laid it out for her plainly: she is stuck up, and he hates the rich, but the one she is out to get is an older, richer elder, so he will help her — he just doesn’t wanna be her friend.

“Alright Mina, here's the deal. On one hand, you're a stuck up bitch. On the other hand, your goal is to get rid of some old as dirt vampire elder. So as much as I hate rich assholes, which you are, I'm gonna help you because there's an older, richer asshole that needs to go.”

“行吧米娜，咱们把话说明白。一方面，你是个自命清高的婊子。另一方面，你的目标是干掉某个老得掉渣的吸血鬼长老。所以尽管我恨死你这种有钱混蛋，我还是会帮你，因为有个更老更有钱的混蛋该滚蛋了。”TL

Venator is a hunter of vampires. She warned him that if he tried to stake her, she would rip out his throat; his answer was that they were both confident they could kill each other, so they might as well get through this like adults.

“Listen old man, you try to stake me and I'll rip out your throat.”

“听着，老头，你敢拿木桩对付我，我就撕了你的喉咙。”TL

Anecdotes

Snobbery. She ranks people by their money. To Abrams she said that she tries not to talk to poor people.

“Of course we haven't met I try not to talk to poor people.”

A Tailor’s Eye. She looks at a person’s clothes before the person. Of Victor she said that whoever stitched him up botched the job, that she is someone who actually knows how to sew, and she offered to fix him up if he would walk one of her shows.

“Whoever stitched you up did a shit job.”

“You walk one of my shows then sure.”

Boasts and Excuses. In defeat, she says that if the entire team had been made up of her, this would never have happened.

Cruelty and Dry Cleaning. What worries her is that she might bend her umbrella. Kelvin calls her casually cruel.
