The Ritual

The ritual is the rite performed to summon a Patron. Beneath the Eclipse, heroes set out across New York, each on their own road, all for the same end; yet what the two Patrons promise each of them is never quite the same.

The ritual is not accomplished at a stroke; it advances step by step as strongholds fall. With every objective taken, those who take part come one step closer to the end.

“Another part of the ritual complete.”

Holliday and Wraith have both announced that they are one step closer to completing the ritual; Kelvin says outright that they are closer to summoning the Patron.

“One step closer to completing the ritual.”

Both Patrons use Hank to sway Infernus: The Archmother says Hank is counting on him to complete the ritual, The Hidden King that Hank is in trouble and he alone has the power to save him; and he himself says, “Let’s go complete a ritual.”

“Hank is counting on you to complete the ritual, Infernus…”

“汉克指望你去完成仪式，炽焱…”

“Hank is in trouble, Infernus, and you alone have the power to save him.”

“Let's go complete a ritual…”

To Vindicta, the two Patrons say different things: The Archmother says she deserves her revenge, and that today she will have it; The Hidden King urges her to complete the ritual and let her soul find rest.

“You deserve your revenge, Vindicta... And today you will have it.”

“你应该复仇的，薇妲。而且今天你就能成功”

“Vindicta, complete the ritual and let your soul find rest.”

“薇妲，完成仪式，让你的灵魂得到安息”

What Bebop hears from both is the same: don’t fail her, complete the ritual. The Archmother says his creator is counting on him; The Hidden King calls Shelly Fisher by name, and says she is running out of time. What Abrams hears is that the time has come to relieve himself of the book’s burden; the two Patrons put it much alike, though The Archmother adds “The Archmother needs you,” and The Hidden King first tells him he protected the tome as no one else could. What Dynamo hears differs from one to the other: The Archmother says his wife seeks to embrace flesh, not steel, while The Hidden King says that if he longs to feel Marla’s hand once more, he must summon The Hidden King; and he himself says that the ritual must be completed.

Some would rather it were never completed. Lady Geist and Warden have both told Dynamo to his face that they will not let him complete the ritual. McGinnis, setting out, said only this: let’s finish the ritual.

The Archmother tells Kelvin it is time to finish what he started all those years ago; The Hidden King only urges him to lead by example, and complete the ritual.

“It's time, Kelvin. Finish what you started all those years ago. Complete the ritual.”

“是时候开尔文了。完成你在多年前开始的工作。完成仪式”

“Lead by example, Kelvin, and complete the ritual.”

“开尔文，以身作则，完成仪式”

Kelvin does not pretend the ritual can be had without violence; he only tells Drifter there is no need to make his opponents suffer.

“I understand that violence is going to happen in the ritual, but it's not necessary for you to make them suffer.”

Deadman Danny counts every fallen stronghold as bringing the ritual one step closer, yet never forgets to pour a little cold water on the cheer.

“Good job, but the ritual is far from over”

At first Violet backed out more than once, saying she has no death wish and refusing to join the ritual. Yet once she is in it, she too says she is ready to finish the ritual, and with every stronghold torn down she feels one step closer to the end.

“Oh, I'm not joining the ritual, I don’t have a death wish.”

“哦，我可不参加仪式，我又不想死。”TL

Nurse Harrow treats the ritual as a job that must be seen through. When a stronghold falls, she says the ritual grows closer to completion; she demands of Victor that he do exactly as she instructs, if they are to see the ritual to completion.

“Do exactly as I instruct and we'll see this ritual to completion.”

“我怎么吩咐，你就怎么做，我们就能把这场仪式进行到底。”TL
