The Baroness

The Baroness stands in Manhattan, and the Doorman calls it the finest hotel in New York. It is famed for its lavish brunch and its spa, and the Doorman keeps his post at its door year in, year out.

For much of the city, the hotel is the place to gather and to entertain. The directors of Fairfax Industries are said to host events for their teams here all the time, yet the Doorman has noticed that McGinnis never does. Dynamo misses its Sunday brunch, and has been to its faculty luncheon as well.

“Looks like we won't have the company Christmas party at The Baroness this year.”

The Doorman is an attentive host, and good at winning people over. He offered Lady Geist a room for two to share with Oathkeeper, and told Shiv that though he does not belong in the Baxter Society, there will always be a place for him here.

“You don't belong in the Baxter Society, Shiv. You know this. But there will always be a place for you here at The Baroness.”

He told Calico that the hotel has a way of calming the tempest of the mind; and he told Viscous that it is much like “The Cube,” a warm refuge where one gets to feel the embrace of oblivion.

“I suppose The Baroness is much like "The Cube." A warm refuge where you get to feel the glorious embrace of oblivion.”

The hotel has its own rules. It must be above politics: when Ivy asked on Carlos’s behalf about hosting a fundraiser here, the Doorman said that if it was to raise money for a mayoral campaign he could not help, but if it was about community efforts, a conversation could be had. Vyper was once kicked out of the place. Paradox is set on learning the hotel’s secrets, yet is kept out all the same.

“You can't keep me out of The Baroness forever, Doorman.”

Mirage has stayed here, and the Doorman made a point of asking how he liked his stay. But Lady Geist holds that the Baroness of today is a shell of its past glory.

Kelvin had heard there were fascinating mysteries afoot at the hotel and began to think of arranging a stay, which the Doorman called a wonderful idea. As the Doorman tells it, here one need no longer worry about Ettrick or the expedition, and someone else will help lighten the load of guilt.

“You wrestle with so much guilt… the things you know you did and even more horrifying, the things you forgot. But at The Baroness you don't need to worry about Ettrick or the expedition. Let me lighten the load.”

When Violet walked past the hotel, the Doorman seemed a lot nicer; she admits, too, that she could never afford its brunch anyway.

She even thinks the Doorman’s portrait should just be hung in the hotel’s lobby already.

After Nurse Harrow brought the Doorman down, she felt she had just angered something powerful, and hoped he wouldn’t take it too personally; after all, she loves high tea here.
